The Arizona-specific part

Half my house is dead. What is that?
Almost always a lost leg. Residential service arrives as two hot legs, and losing one kills half the circuits while the other half runs normally. The break can be at the utility connection, the meter, or your main. Treat it as urgent, and switch off large 240-volt appliances like the AC and dryer until it is found, because running them on a failed leg is hard on the equipment.

And if you run a portable generator, keep it outdoors, away from openings, and never connected to house wiring except through a proper transfer device.
