Heat Pump
Most Phoenix-area homes — a large majority of everything built since the ’90s — heat with a heat pump: the same outdoor unit that cools you in July literally runs in reverse to heat you in January.
Gas Furnace / Gas-Pack
Older homes and certain neighborhoods run gas furnaces, and plenty of rooftop package units are “gas-packs” — gas heat and electric cooling in one cabinet on the roof.
Not sure which you have? If a gas meter feeds your furnace closet, you’re gas; if your “heater” is the same equipment as your AC, you’re a heat pump. Either way, we service it.

Heat pump heating problems — the Phoenix majority
Often normal: heat pump supply air runs ~90–100°F — warmer than the room but cooler than your hand, which is why it “feels cold.” If the house holds temperature, relax. If it doesn’t, read on.
The valve that flips the system between cooling and heating sticks or fails — you get cooling in January or heating that never engages. A genuine repair item, and a classic one.
Heat pumps carry electric strip heaters as backup for cold mornings and defrost cycles. Failed strips mean the house can’t keep up on the coldest days; strips stuck on mean an electric bill that will make you sit down. If your thermostat shows “aux heat” constantly, call us.
On cold, damp mornings the outdoor coil ices; the system periodically defrosts itself (steam off the unit is normal — don’t panic). Failed defrost controls let ice build until heating collapses.
The same capacitors and contactors that die in July can die in January — the machine doesn’t know what season it is, only how many hours it has run. And in Phoenix, it has run.
Gas furnace problems — older Valley homes and gas-packs
Modern furnaces light with hot-surface igniters or spark — both wear out, and a furnace that clicks but never fires usually lives here. Standing pilots on older units blow out or lose their thermocouple.
The #1 “furnace starts then quits after 10 seconds” cause: a corroded sensor can’t prove flame, so the control board shuts gas off. Quick fix, constant caller.
Furnaces that overheat and shut down — nearly always airflow: clogged filter, failing blower, or ducts that can’t move the air. The furnace is protecting itself; the fix is upstream.
The heat exchanger keeps combustion gases separate from the air you breathe. Cracks can let carbon monoxide into the airstream. We inspect exchangers on every gas-furnace call, and if we red-tag one, that’s not upsell theater — it’s the call we’d make in our own parents’ house. Every gas-heated home should run CO detectors; if yours doesn’t, fix that this week.

Where Valley heating fails hardest
Anthem, New River, Cave Creek, Carefree, north Scottsdale — runs 5–10° colder than central Phoenix and sees genuine hard freezes, so heat pumps there lean on auxiliary strips more and defrost failures bite sooner.
Sun City, Sun City West, Sun Lakes — combine older equipment with residents most vulnerable to cold houses, which is why those no-heat calls get priority triage.

Heating repair questions we hear all winter
My heat pump is blowing air that feels cool. Broken?
Feel isn’t the test — hold a thermometer to a supply vent. Heat pump air at 90–100°F reads “cool” to a 93°F hand but heats the house fine. If supply air is genuinely cold or the house is losing ground, then something’s wrong: reversing valve, refrigerant, or defrost. That’s a call.
Why is steam pouring off my outdoor unit on cold mornings?
That’s defrost mode and it’s normal — the unit melting frost off its coil, a few minutes at a time. Concerning versions: ice that never clears, defrost running constantly, or heating that collapses afterward.
My furnace starts, runs ten seconds, and shuts off. What is it?
Classic flame-sensor behavior — the board can’t prove flame and closes the gas valve. Usually a clean-or-replace fix. Repeated ignition lockouts also point at igniters, gas pressure, or venting; either way it’s diagnosable in one visit.
Is a cracked heat exchanger really a shut-it-down problem?
Yes. Carbon monoxide is odorless and the failure mode is silent. If we red-tag an exchanger we’ll show you the crack on camera, explain options (exchanger replacement versus furnace replacement — age usually decides), and help you heat the house safely in the meantime. And please: CO detectors in every gas-heated home.
