Sizing is the whole ballgame — and most installs skip it
The dirty secret of residential HVAC is how many “professional” installs are sized by rule of thumb: 400 square feet per ton, match whatever was there before, done. In Phoenix that guesswork fails in both directions.

SEER2, staging, and what efficiency actually buys you here

Installation day, step by step
Floor protection down, attic access staged, power confirmed, old-equipment recovery plan set (refrigerant is recovered per EPA 608 — never vented).
Old condenser, coil, and line set handled properly; disposal and recycling are on us.
New pad or roof curb as needed, correctly sized line set, filter drier, nitrogen purge while brazing (skipping this contaminates the system — a classic corner-cut), pressure test, deep vacuum to spec, and a weighed-in refrigerant charge. Modern equipment ships with R-454B; we’re certified and equipped for it.
Static pressure checked, blower configured, thermostat installed and paired, and the system run through full cycles while we verify temperature split and amp draws against manufacturer spec.
Valley cities require permits for system replacement — Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, all of them, each with its own process. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, register your manufacturer warranty, and file your APS or SRP rebate and federal 25C tax-credit paperwork where the equipment qualifies. You get a folder with all of it.

Rebates and credits worth real money
High-efficiency installs in APS and SRP territory routinely qualify for utility rebates, and the federal 25C tax credit covers up to 30% (capped) on qualifying heat pumps and high-efficiency systems. The catch is paperwork filed correctly with the right equipment certificates — which is our job, not yours. We flag qualifying options in the quote so the incentives are part of the decision, not a surprise afterward.
Why installation quality outranks the brand name
Industry studies have found a large share of new systems are installed with defects that cut efficiency — wrong charge, leaky ducts, bad airflow. Translated: a mid-tier unit installed precisely will outperform a flagship installed carelessly, every time, for fifteen years. Ductwork
Bolting a precision-installed system to leaky 20-year-old ducts is buying a race car and towing it. Install day is the cheapest moment to seal or replace failing runs — the crew is on site, the air handler is out, and attic access is staged. We test static pressure as part of commissioning anyway, so you’ll know the ducts’ condition either way; the fix is a line item you can take or leave.
Controls
Every install includes thermostat setup, and a smart thermostat (Ecobee, Nest, or the manufacturer’s own) is a modest add that earns its keep in this climate: pre-cooling ahead of APS/SRP peak windows, remote control when you’re traveling (or deployed — see the military page for why we mention it), and runtime alerts that flag problems before they’re failures. Variable-speed systems often require their manufacturer’s communicating stat — we’ll tell you which combinations actually work rather than selling gadget stacking.

How long does an AC installation take?
Most straight replacements: one day, cooling by evening. Rooftop package units with crane sets, or jobs that include duct replacement, typically run one to two days. You’ll know the schedule before we start.
Can I just replace the outdoor unit and keep my old coil?
Usually a false economy. Mismatched coils void efficiency ratings and often manufacturer warranties, and an old coil on a new compressor is the classic source of early failures. We’ll tell you the narrow cases where it’s legitimate.
Do I really need a permit?
For replacements and new installs in Valley cities — yes. Unpermitted work surfaces at home sale, can complicate insurance claims, and skips the inspection that protects you. We handle the whole process; it’s built into the job.
