Multi-Zone Systems
A multi-zone system feeds several indoor heads from one outdoor unit, which appeals when you’re conditioning multiple rooms or an entire small home — but it deserves an honest conversation. Multi-zone costs more per zone, and sizing gets trickier because the outdoor unit has to modulate gracefully across whatever combination of heads happens to be calling. In some houses, two single-zones beat one multi-zone on both price and redundancy. We quote what fits the house, not what’s biggest on the price sheet.
Inverter efficiency and SEER2, measured in Phoenix hours
Nearly every modern mini-split is an inverter machine — instead of slamming on at full blast and cycling off, the compressor throttles continuously to match the actual load. In a climate where cooling season stretches from April into October, that modulation matters enormously, because efficiency ratings convert to dollars in proportion to runtime and Phoenix runtime is about as long as it gets. Sizing still matters — yes, even for one room
Ductless doesn’t repeal the rules of load calculation. Undersize it and it runs flat-out all afternoon and loses the fight anyway. Before we quote, we run the numbers on the actual space — square footage, insulation levels, window orientation and shading, ceiling height, air sealing, and how the room gets used — a compact Manual J rather than a guess off a brochure chart. It takes a little longer than pointing at “the 12,000 BTU one.” It’s also the difference between a system you love and a system you tolerate.
What mini-split installation day looks like in Phoenix

Wall-mounted heads are the standard; ceiling cassettes and low-profile floor consoles handle rooms where the walls are glass, tile, or already spoken for. Placement is planned around airflow throw and condensate routing — not wherever the bracket is easiest to hang.
One small exterior penetration, properly sealed and flashed, carries the refrigerant lines, condensate, and control wiring inside a tidy line-set cover. No gaping chase, no spaghetti running down your stucco.

Here’s what a lot of quotes won’t tell you: the typical Phoenix garage is an uninsulated box behind a west- or south-facing metal door, and on a 115° afternoon the inside can be punishingly hot. An uninsulated garage needs meaningfully more capacity than the same square footage inside the house, and even then the system will work hard on peak afternoons. Can one mini-split cool my whole house?
One head cools the open area it can “see” — it won’t push air down hallways into closed bedrooms. Whole-house ductless means multiple heads on a multi-zone system, which we’ll quote honestly against central options. For a single room or an open layout, one properly sized head is superb.
Do mini-splits hold up in Phoenix heat?

Wall head, ceiling cassette, or floor console?

Does a mini-split need a permit in the Valley?
