Emergency Heat Light On: What Your Heat Pump Is Telling You.

An emergency heat light on usually means electric backup heat is running or the thermostat has been placed in emergency heat mode. Aux heat can be normal during cold starts. Emergency heat is different. It bypasses the heat pump and costs more to run, so check the thermostat setting first and watch whether the outdoor unit is working.

What’s actually happening

A heat pump has two heating tools. The first is the heat pump itself, which moves heat from outside to inside through the refrigerant circuit. The second is backup electric resistance heat, often called auxiliary heat or emergency heat. Those strips are basically controlled electric heaters inside the air handler.

Auxiliary heat can turn on automatically when the thermostat sees that the heat pump is falling behind. That can happen after a big thermostat setback, during a cold morning, or while the outdoor unit is in defrost. Aux heat is support. The outdoor unit may still be running, and the thermostat may show AUX, HEAT AUX, or a similar message.

Emergency heat is not the same thing. Emergency heat tells the thermostat to stop using the outdoor heat pump and heat the house with backup heat only. It is meant for a failed, iced, or damaged outdoor unit, not for daily comfort. Electric resistance heat works, but it uses much more power than normal heat-pump operation. That is why the light matters. It is not just a label on the screen. It can change the bill.

The confusing part is that thermostat brands use different words and lights. Some homeowners see an amber light and assume the system is in trouble. Some thermostats light up whenever auxiliary heat runs for a few minutes. Others show emergency heat only when someone selected that mode. The physical question is simple: is the outdoor unit running normally, and is the system using backup heat as a helper or as the whole heating source?

In Arizona, this issue often shows up after a rare cold night or after someone bumps the thermostat several degrees. Many Phoenix-metro homes are slab-on-grade with no basements, and air handlers and ducts often live in attics that hit 150°F+ in summer. Those attic ducts can leak or restrict airflow, which makes the thermostat think the house needs more help than it should.

Likely causes

The light by itself does not prove a failed heat pump. The pattern around the light does. Check whether the outdoor unit is running, whether the house is warming, and whether the light shuts off after the system catches up.

If the outdoor unit is not carrying its share, heat pump repair should focus on controls, airflow, refrigerant behavior, and the electric heat circuit instead of guessing from the thermostat screen alone.

Checks you can safely make yourself

  1. Read the exact thermostat mode. Look for Heat, Aux Heat, or Emergency Heat. If it is set to Emergency Heat and the outdoor unit is not damaged or iced over, switch back to normal Heat and give the system time to respond.
  2. Lower the demand. If you raised the thermostat five or six degrees, set it closer to the room temperature. Big jumps often bring on auxiliary heat. Heat pumps are happier with steady settings.
  3. Replace thermostat batteries. Weak batteries can cause odd display behavior or poor relay control. If the thermostat uses batteries, install fresh ones.
  4. Check the breaker one time. Look for a tripped breaker serving the outdoor unit or air handler. Reset once only. If it trips again, stop. Repeated resetting can damage equipment and hides the clue a technician needs.
  5. Look at the outdoor unit. In normal heat mode, the outdoor unit should usually run except during certain defrost moments or satisfied calls. If it is dead silent for an entire heating call, something needs diagnosis.
  6. Check the filter. A packed filter can force long run times and repeated auxiliary heat. Replace it with the right size and airflow direction.
  7. Open vents and returns. Make sure supply vents are open and returns are not blocked by furniture, storage, or rugs. Backup heat needs airflow too.
  8. Look for a float switch or drain issue. Some systems interrupt operation when a condensate pan or drain is backed up. A blank thermostat can point toward a safety switch, not a bad thermostat.

Do not remove air-handler panels to test heat strips. Do not touch capacitors; they can hold charge. Refrigerant work is licensed work. If you have a dual-fuel system with gas backup, do not open or close gas valves as a troubleshooting step.

When to stop and call

Call when the thermostat is in normal heat mode but the emergency or auxiliary light stays on for long stretches, the outdoor unit does not run, the breaker trips, the house will not reach set temperature, or the system smells hot in a way that is not normal dust burn-off. Also call if a new thermostat was installed and the emergency heat behavior started afterward. Heat pump wiring is not universal, and a wrong configuration can make good equipment act broken.

Continuing to run emergency heat can be expensive. The house may stay warm while the heat pump problem sits untouched outside. If the outdoor unit has a refrigerant, fan, compressor, or defrost problem, waiting can turn a smaller repair into a larger one. If airflow is weak, heat strips can run hotter than they should.

What the fix usually involves

If the issue is thermostat setup, the repair may be configuration, wiring correction, or a thermostat replacement. That is the low end of the mess, but it still needs verification. The technician should confirm that normal heat, auxiliary heat, and emergency heat each do the right thing.

If the outdoor unit is failing to heat, the repair can involve a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, defrost board, sensor, reversing valve diagnosis, refrigerant leak search, or compressor testing. If the indoor backup heat is the problem, the scope may include sequencers, relays, breakers, heat strips, safeties, or airflow corrections.

Why is my emergency heat light on?

It may be on because the thermostat is set to emergency heat, or because auxiliary heat is helping during a cold start or defrost cycle. Check the exact mode first. If the outdoor unit is not running in normal heat mode, the light is a warning sign.

Is auxiliary heat the same as emergency heat?

No. Auxiliary heat assists the heat pump when needed. Emergency heat bypasses the outdoor heat pump and uses backup heat only. Aux can be normal. Emergency heat should be temporary unless the outdoor unit is failed, iced, or waiting for repair.

Will emergency heat make my electric bill high?

Usually, yes. Electric resistance heat uses much more power than heat-pump operation. A few hours may not hurt much, but days of emergency heat can show up hard on the bill. Use it to stay warm, then get the heat pump diagnosed.

Can I leave emergency heat on overnight?

You can use it overnight if the house needs heat and the heat pump is not working, but treat it as a temporary setting. If the outdoor unit is safe to run and just needed a thermostat correction, switch back to normal heat and watch the system.
