What’s actually happening

If the thermostat went blank right after a filter change, check the air-handler door. Many indoor units have a door switch that kills power when the panel is not seated. If it went blank after a storm or thermostat replacement, suspect low-voltage fuse, transformer, or wiring.
Checks you can safely make yourself
- Replace the batteries. Use new name-brand batteries, not the half-used ones from a drawer. Match the polarity marks. If the screen returns, set the thermostat to cool and wait through any built-in delay.
- Seat the thermostat on its base. Many displays pull straight off for battery access. Press it back evenly until it sits flush. Do not bend pins or tug wires.
- Check the thermostat settings. If the screen comes back, make sure it is in cool mode, not off or heat. Set the cooling point below room temperature.
- Look for a wet float switch. The switch may be on the drain line, in a secondary pan, or near the indoor coil. If water is holding the float up, the blank screen may be the safety doing exactly what it should do.
- Check the indoor unit service switch. Some air handlers have a light-switch-style shutoff nearby. Make sure it has not been bumped off.
- Check the breaker once. If the indoor unit breaker is tripped, reset it one time. If it trips again, stop. A repeated trip means there is an electrical problem.
- Check the air-handler door. If you recently changed the filter, make sure the blower door is fully seated. A door switch can interrupt power to the controls.
- Confirm vents and filter are not choking airflow. A severely dirty filter can lead to coil icing or water problems that trigger float switches. Replace the filter if it is loaded.
When you look for water, use your eyes first. In an attic, a secondary pan can be shallow, dusty, and hard to see in low light. A small amount of water around the switch can be enough to lift the float. Do not assume the drain is fine because the house feels dry. During monsoon weather, the system may make water steadily even while the outdoor air still feels like the desert.
Do not jump out a float switch to make the AC run. That switch is there because water is not draining. Do not open the control panel and start replacing fuses without finding why the fuse blew. Do not touch capacitors. They hold charge. Refrigerant is licensed work. If the system shares controls with gas heat and you find a gas valve closed, leave it closed.
When to stop and call
Call when fresh batteries do nothing, the breaker trips again, the thermostat goes blank repeatedly, water is sitting in the pan, or the blank screen started after wiring work. Also call if the thermostat is blank but you smell hot electrical insulation near the indoor unit. That is not a thermostat setting problem.
Running around the house turning things off and on can hide the original clue. If a float switch opened, the drain needs attention. If a fuse blew, something shorted. If the transformer failed, the new transformer can fail too unless the low-voltage circuit is checked.
