What’s actually happening
An air conditioner does not make cold air from nothing. It moves heat from inside the house to the outdoor coil. When the house has been baking all day, the equipment is not just fighting the air temperature in the rooms. Arizona homes are usually slab-on-grade, so there is no cool basement helping the house bleed heat downward. The duct system is often in the attic, and Phoenix-metro attics can hit 150°F+. Checks you can safely make yourself
- Look at the thermostat first. Make sure it is set to cool, the fan is on auto, and the programmed schedule is not raising the set point at night. Replace batteries if the screen is dim, fading, or blank.
- Check the temperature at more than one room. If the hallway is close to set point but bedrooms are warm, the issue may be duct balance, closed doors, return air path, or attic heat over those rooms.
- Reset the breaker one time only. If the AC breaker is tripped, turn it fully off and then on once. If it trips again, stop. Repeated resets can damage equipment and point to an electrical fault.
- Check the air filter. Pull it out and hold it toward light. If you cannot see through it, replace it with the correct size. Do not run the system without a filter except for a very brief test while you are standing there.
- Look for a tripped float switch. Many attic air handlers have a condensate safety switch in the drain pan or drain line. If the pan has water or the switch is lifted, the system may shut off to prevent water damage.

- Open supply vents and clear returns. Make sure furniture, rugs, curtains, and storage are not choking airflow. Closed bedroom doors can also block return air and make those rooms climb at night.
- Look at the outdoor coil. With power off, you can gently rinse loose dirt from the outside of the coil with a garden hose. Do not use a pressure washer and do not bend fins.
Do not touch capacitors. They can hold charge after power is off. Do not add refrigerant, vent refrigerant, or connect gauges unless you are licensed and equipped for it. If the system is gas heat with a shared air handler, leave the gas valve closed if it is closed and do not experiment with it.
When to stop and call
Stop running the system if you see ice, smell electrical heat, hear hard buzzing, see the breaker trip twice, or notice the outdoor fan running while the compressor is silent. Stop if the suction line is frozen, the indoor coil is dripping into the pan, or the system runs for hours and loses ground instead of holding steady.
Continuing to run it can turn a small problem into a larger one. Low airflow can freeze the coil and send liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor. A weak capacitor can overheat a motor. A low charge condition can raise compressor temperature and reduce oil return. A clogged drain can put water into ceilings, cabinets, or insulation.
