Checks you can safely make yourself
- Set the thermostat correctly. Choose cool, lower the setpoint below room temperature, and wait a few minutes. Some systems have built-in time delays.
- Replace thermostat batteries. Weak batteries can interrupt the call or make the display unreliable.
- Check the filter. A clogged filter can freeze the coil or trip safeties, which can stop normal cooling operation.
- Look for water at the float switch. A tripped condensate safety may shut down the cooling call. Do not bypass it.
- Check the breaker one time. If it is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and leave it off.
- Look at the outdoor disconnect. Make sure it appears seated. Do not open the disconnect or touch metal contacts.
- Open vents and returns. Poor airflow can cause freeze-ups and high stress. Make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains are not blocking air.
- Listen carefully. Humming, clicking, buzzing, fan-only operation, and immediate breaker trips are useful clues. Write them down.
- Give it a short delay. If power was interrupted, wait five to ten minutes before expecting a restart. Rapid cycling is hard on compressors.
Do not test or replace capacitors yourself. They can hold charge even after power is off. Do not add refrigerant or attach gauges unless you are licensed for that work. Do not keep resetting a breaker. If the system has gas heat, leave gas valves closed.
Also avoid washing the outdoor cabinet while trying to diagnose a no-start. Cleaning around the unit is fine, but water and electrical compartments do not mix. If weeds, storage bins, or patio items are crowding the cabinet, clear the space around it and leave the electrical side alone.
When to stop and call
Stop when the compressor hums but will not start, when the outdoor fan runs without compressor sound, when the breaker trips after one reset, when the unit starts and shuts off quickly, or when there is a hot electrical smell. Those symptoms sit in the capacitor, contactor, wiring, motor, pressure, or compressor bucket.
Continuing to run start attempts can cook terminals, overheat windings, weaken motors, and push the compressor deeper into overload. A compressor that is only missing a proper start assist or capacitor can be damaged by repeated failed starts. A system with a dead condenser fan can overpressure and shut down. A shorted compressor can trip protection for a reason.
