What’s actually happening
Run time is not automatically bad. An air conditioner is designed to run long cycles during heavy load. Long, steady operation is often more efficient and more comfortable than short bursts that start and stop all day. The compressor uses a lot of power at startup, and the system needs time to pull heat out of walls, furniture, ducts, and air. On a very hot day, the AC may run for hours because the house is gaining heat for hours.
The question is duty cycle under conditions. If it is 108 to 115 degrees outside, the sun is hitting the roof and west glass, and the thermostat is holding near the set point, long run time may be expected. If the system runs all day and the indoor temperature rises anyway, something is wrong or the house load is beyond the equipment. If it runs all evening after the outdoor temperature drops, that is a stronger clue that capacity, airflow, ductwork, or controls need attention.

One pattern matters: if the system runs constantly and the supply air still feels strong and cold, the house may be gaining too much heat. If it runs constantly and the supply air is weak or only mildly cool, the equipment or airflow needs diagnosis.
Checks you can safely make yourself
- Check the thermostat mode and schedule. Make sure it is in cool mode and not following a schedule that drops the set point hard in the afternoon. A big setback can make the AC run for hours trying to catch up.
- Set a realistic target for the weather. During extreme heat, try 78 and watch whether the system holds. If it holds 78 but not 72, that may be design and heat load, not failure.
- Replace the filter. Use the correct size and airflow direction. A restrictive or dirty filter makes the blower work harder and the coil do less useful cooling.
- Open supply and return paths. Do not close a bunch of vents to force air elsewhere. That can raise static pressure and reduce total airflow. Move furniture away from returns.
- Look for ice. Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil means stop cooling. Let it thaw. Ice points to airflow or refrigerant trouble.
- Check the outdoor unit. Clear weeds, boxes, and debris around it. With power off, you can gently rinse loose dirt from the condenser coil. Do not use high pressure.
- Check the float switch area. If water is backing up, cooling may cut in and out. A system that keeps stopping and restarting can feel like it runs all day because it never gets ahead.
- Check the breaker only if it tripped. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop. Breakers trip for a reason.
- Watch what happens after sunset. If the AC finally catches up when outdoor temperature drops, heat load is a big part of the story. If it still cannot catch up, suspect a fault.
Do not open electrical panels inside the condenser or air handler. Capacitors hold charge. Do not add refrigerant or vent refrigerant. That is licensed work and the charge has to be diagnosed properly. If your system includes gas heat and a gas valve is closed, leave it closed.
