A dead AC usually starts with power, controls, or a safety switch. Check thermostat batteries, cooling mode, the breaker one time, the outdoor disconnect, the filter, and any wet float switch. What’s actually happening
When an AC will not turn on, there are several different “offs.” The thermostat may be off. The indoor blower may be off. The outdoor unit may be off. Or the whole low-voltage control circuit may be interrupted by a safety device. Each version points somewhere different.
A normal cooling call starts at the thermostat. The thermostat closes a low-voltage circuit that tells the air handler and condenser to run. The air handler starts the indoor blower. The outdoor unit starts the compressor and condenser fan. If the thermostat has no power, has dead batteries, is misconfigured, or is not actually calling for cooling, nothing else may happen.
Power trouble is the next branch. HVAC equipment uses high voltage for motors and compressors and low voltage for controls. A tripped breaker, pulled disconnect, blown low-voltage fuse, failed transformer, shorted wire, bad contactor, or failed capacitor can all make the system look dead from the hallway. Some faults shut down only the outdoor unit while the indoor blower still runs. Others stop everything.
Drain safety switches are another common cause, especially where condensate drains collect dust and algae. If water backs up, a float switch can interrupt the cooling call so the system does not keep making water and overflow. That can feel like a random failure, but it is doing a useful job. Bypassing it to get cooling back can trade an AC repair for ceiling or cabinet damage.

The important distinction is whether the system is being told to run. If the thermostat is not sending a call, the equipment may be fine. If the call is present and power is present, the problem is inside the equipment. That is where meter readings matter.
Checks you can safely make yourself
- Set the thermostat to cool and lower the setpoint at least five degrees below room temperature. Make sure the schedule is not holding a higher temperature. If there is a delay message, wait five minutes.
- Replace thermostat batteries if your thermostat uses them. If the screen is blank, do this before assuming the AC failed. Some thermostats will still show a screen on weak batteries but fail to switch correctly.
- Check the air filter. A severely clogged filter can lead to freezing or limit switches on some equipment. It may not be the reason for a completely dead system, but it is still part of the safe triage.
- Check the breaker one time. Move the breaker fully off, then fully on. If it trips again immediately or after the AC tries to start, stop. Do not keep resetting it to “see what happens.”
- Look at the outdoor disconnect. Confirm it has not been pulled out or left off after yard work, roof work, or prior service. Do not remove condenser panels or reach inside the unit.
- Check for a wet float switch or drain pan. If water is present, the condensate drain may be clogged and the switch may be stopping the AC. Do not tape, lift, bypass, or unplug the switch to force cooling.
- Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked. This will not fix a dead control circuit, but it prevents a restart from immediately running into airflow trouble.
Do not test capacitors with improvised tools. Do not jumper thermostat wires unless you know exactly what the circuit is and are prepared to replace a fuse, board, or transformer if you are wrong. Do not handle refrigerant lines as a diagnostic step. Refrigerant work is licensed work. If gas equipment is involved and you smell gas, leave the gas valve closed and do not relight anything.
When to stop and call
Stop after one breaker reset. Stop if the outdoor unit hums, clicks repeatedly, or gets hot without starting. Stop if the thermostat is blank after fresh batteries, if water is in the float switch, if the same fuse or breaker keeps opening, or if you smell electrical heat. Those are not settings problems.
Continuing to force starts can damage motors, compressors, contactors, boards, and wiring. A breaker trip is a protective event. A float switch is a protective event. A compressor that is trying to start on a weak capacitor is building heat every time it fails. That is why repeated attempts are not harmless.
