The first question is whether the system can breathe. If airflow is obviously weak, fix that before thinking refrigerant. The second question is whether the ice returns after the system fully thaws and airflow is corrected. If it does, the refrigerant circuit or equipment operation needs testing.

- Turn cooling off. Do not keep running the compressor with ice on the line. Set the thermostat mode to off. If the fan setting is available and the blower will run, set fan to on to help thaw the indoor coil.
- Give it time. A frozen indoor coil can take hours to thaw. Do not chip ice with a tool. Do not use a torch, heat gun, or sharp object. Water may drain as it melts.
- Check the filter. Replace a dirty filter with the correct size and airflow direction. If the old filter is bent, sucked inward, or packed with dust, airflow starvation is a serious suspect.
- Open supply vents and clear return grilles. Make sure furniture, rugs, curtains, and boxes are not blocking airflow. Do not close half the house to force air into another room.
- Check for water in the float switch pan after thawing. Ice melt can show up as water around the air handler or in a safety pan. If the float switch trips, the drain may need clearing.
- Look at the outdoor unit only from the outside. Confirm the fan is running during a cooling call after thawing. If it hums, stops, or the breaker trips, shut it off and call.
- Check the breaker only once if the system will not restart after thawing. One reset is enough. A second trip means stop.
Do not open refrigerant ports or add refrigerant. Refrigerant work is licensed work. Do not handle capacitors or contactors; capacitors can hold charge after power is off.
