A whole-home rewire is the biggest electrical project a house ever gets, and the questions that keep people up at night are rarely about wire. What this work involves
A rewire replaces the branch-circuit wiring throughout the house: new home runs from the panel, new conductors to every outlet, switch, and fixture, new boxes where the old ones are undersized or damaged, and protection brought up to current code. The old system comes out of service permanently. What makes it a project rather than a repair is sequencing, because the house has to keep working while its nervous system is replaced. It is the deepest project in our electrical division, and the one where planning quality shows the most.
Planned properly, the project breaks into stages you can see coming:

The house gets divided into work zones with a cutover order, so each area is opened, rewired, verified, and re-energized before the next zone starts. You are never camping in a fully dead house.

The Arizona-specific part
Phoenix rewires are attic projects. Slab construction means there is no crawlspace under the floor, so nearly every new run crosses the attic before it drops down a wall cavity. From roughly mid-June through September that attic is the hottest workspace in the Valley, which is why a well-run summer rewire front-loads attic work into early morning hours and saves in-room trim work for the afternoon. Cooler months loosen the schedule considerably. None of this changes the quality of the finished system; it changes how a competent contractor builds the calendar, and you should hear that plan before work starts, not discover it mid-project.
The other local reality is why Valley homes come to this decision at all. The usual trigger is not nostalgia, it is era: aluminum branch circuits and tired insulation in houses from the sixties and seventies, or original wiring that has been spliced and extended by decades of handymen until no one can say what feeds what. Can we live in the house during a rewire?
Most families do. Phased cutover keeps the occupied parts of the house powered each night, and we agree on which rooms are in play each day so bedrooms and the kitchen are not offline at the same time. It is still a construction project, with dust barriers and crews in the house, so some households with the option choose to be away for the heaviest days. Either way works.
How much wall damage should I really expect?
Expect access cuts, not demolition. Attic fishing reaches most device locations in a typical single-story Phoenix home, and cuts happen where fire blocking, insulation-packed bays, or framing surprises stop a clean drop. The written scope lists the expected cut locations and the patch plan, and if we open something unplanned, you hear about it that day rather than finding it behind a couch.
How long does a whole-home rewire take?
It depends on the circuit count, the access, and whether the house is occupied, which is exactly why we put a working-day estimate in the written scope instead of quoting a number before seeing the attic. Occupied homes run longer than vacant ones because daily re-energizing and protection take real time. What we will not do is promise a feel-good schedule and then live in your house past it.
Will we have power at night during the project?
That is the point of phasing. Each work day closes with the panel buttoned up and the zones you live in re-energized. Refrigeration, cooling, and bedrooms get priority in the cutover order, because a Phoenix summer does not pause for construction and nobody should sleep in an uncooled house to save a scheduling conversation. The exceptions are planned in advance, like the day the panel itself is swapped if the project includes one, and you will know about those days before they arrive.
Who patches the drywall afterward?
Whichever way you prefer, stated in the scope. Some clients have us include patching so the walls come back paint-ready; others have a drywall or paint contractor they trust and want the cuts left clean and documented for them. Both are normal. The only wrong version is the one where nobody wrote it down and the cuts become an argument.
Does a rewire include a new panel?
Often, but not automatically. If the existing load center is a healthy modern panel with capacity for the new circuit map, it can stay. If it is a legacy brand with documented problems, is corroded, or lacks the space the new design needs, the honest move is replacing it during the same project while the system is already open. The survey settles it, and the scope prices it either way.
What inspections happen along the way?
Permitted rewires get inspected at rough, with wiring visible and accessible, and again at final when devices are trimmed out and the system is live. The inspector is checking the same things we self-check: box fill, support, splice accessibility, protection coverage, and terminations. We schedule both visits, meet the inspector on site, and handle any corrections as part of the flat-rate scope rather than as extras.
What happens to the old wire in the walls?
It is disconnected at both ends and abandoned dead in place where removal would mean tearing open finished surfaces for no safety gain, which is standard and code-acceptable practice. Old wire that is accessible, in the attic or in open bays, comes out with the demolition. What never happens is old and new wiring sharing a live role; the retired system is fully de-energized, not half-used.
What actually changes day to day when it is done?
Grounded outlets everywhere, so three-prong plugs and surge protectors finally mean what they claim. Breakers that hold under real modern loads instead of nuisance-tripping. AFCI and GFCI protection standing guard in the rooms where code wants them. Enough circuits that the microwave, the space heater, and the office gear stop fighting. Mostly, the electrical system disappears from your list of things to think about.
