Rats chewed my wiring. Can it be fixed?
Almost always, yes. Rodent damage is repairable by replacing the chewed sections and splicing in proper boxes, but it is rarely as small as the first bite you found, so we inspect the full reachable run before quoting. The repair should also be the second half of the story: until the animals are excluded from the attic or outbuilding, new wire is just fresh chewing material, and we will say so plainly.
What is a flying splice and why is it a problem?
It is a wire-to-wire connection made outside a junction box, usually twisted, taped, and left in an attic or wall. The problem is physics plus hiding: connections are where circuits loosen and heat, and a splice outside a box has no enclosure to contain that failure and no cover to let anyone find it. Code requires splices in accessible covered boxes for exactly this reason, and converting flying splices into boxed ones is some of the most worthwhile repair work we do.
Can aluminum wiring be repaired without a full rewire?
Yes. Aluminum branch circuits can be remediated at the connection points, which is where the trouble lives: AlumiConn connectors joining aluminum to copper pigtails, or CO/ALR-rated devices at outlets and switches, all torqued to spec. That is the recognized, durable path we install. COPALUM is the other accepted remedy, but it is a proprietary irreversible crimp system that only a manufacturer-certified installer with the special tool may perform, so we refer that work rather than quote it. The rewire conversation is still worth having for some homes, but it is a choice about the future, not the only fix available today.
Why did a drywall screw take out a whole circuit?
Because the screw did not just pierce insulation, it either bridged conductors or nicked one badly enough that the breaker, doing its job, opened the circuit. Can you find damage hidden inside a wall?
Usually, and without opening the wall like a piñata. Circuit testing narrows the fault between known points, tone tracing follows the cable path, and measurements tell us which side of a box the problem sits on. The goal is one accurate opening instead of exploratory holes. When a wall does have to open, the cut is planned, square, and included in the patch conversation before it happens.
Is it safe to keep using a circuit I know is damaged?
Treat a known-damaged circuit as off until it is repaired. Flip its breaker off, run what you need from a different circuit, and resist the urge to reset a breaker that keeps opening, because that breaker is protecting you from the damage you already know exists. A dead circuit is an inconvenience. A damaged circuit held on by repeated resets is an experiment, and the attic is a bad laboratory.
