Phoenix spends a stretch of every summer inside real lightning season. Do power strips actually protect anything?
A basic power strip is an extension cord with a switch and protects nothing. A quality surge-rated protector does clamp small spikes for the equipment plugged into it. What it cannot do is protect hardwired equipment or absorb large events on its own. It is the second layer of a system, useful once the panel layer and the grounding underneath both exist.
What does a whole-home surge protector cover?
A panel-mounted SPD sits where power enters the house and clamps surge events for every circuit at once. That includes the hardwired equipment no plug-in device can reach: the air conditioner, the water heater, wall ovens, well pumps, and lighting. It knocks large surges down to a level the point-of-use layer can comfortably absorb.
How does lightning get into my wiring?
Direct strikes on houses are rare. The common path is a nearby strike coupling onto power, cable, or phone lines and riding into the neighborhood as a voltage spike, or energy induced through the ground itself. That is why protection is designed around the service entrance, where those paths converge on your home.
Do surges happen outside monsoon season?
Constantly, just smaller. Utility switching, faults elsewhere on the grid, and large motors cycling inside your own home all generate transients year-round.
