My outlets are two-prong. What are my options?
Three honest paths. New grounded circuits can be run to the rooms where grounding matters most, offices, kitchens, entertainment walls. Code also recognizes replacing two-prong devices with GFCI protection and the proper no-equipment-ground labeling, which adds shock protection without a grounding conductor. And for some homes the right conversation is a larger rewiring plan. We lay out all three with real scopes. Which path fits depends on the wiring, the budget, and how long you plan to keep the house.
Does dry desert soil really ground poorly?
Yes. Soil conducts through moisture, and Phoenix soil spends most of the year without much. Add caliche layers and a single casually driven rod can be far less effective than it looks. The fix is not exotic: proper electrodes, supplemental rods with correct spacing, and measurement instead of assumption. It simply has to be done deliberately here.
What is the difference between bonding and grounding?
Grounding connects your electrical system to the earth through electrodes. Bonding connects the metal parts of your house to each other, piping, enclosures, equipment, so everything sits at the same potential. Put simply, grounding gives energy a path to earth, and bonding keeps the metal you can touch from becoming that path. A safe system needs both.
How many ground rods does a house need?
Code accepts a single rod only when its connection to earth tests good enough, and in Valley soil that test is easy to fail. The practical standard is a pair of rods, properly spaced, or reliance on a concrete-encased electrode where the home has one. We decide from what testing and site conditions say, not from habit. Adding a second rod is easy insurance compared to the effort of proving a single one sufficient.
What is a Ufer or concrete-encased electrode?
It is a grounding electrode cast into the concrete footing of the house, named for the engineer who developed the technique. Because concrete in contact with soil retains moisture, it performs well in exactly the dry conditions that make rods struggle, and most newer Valley homes have one. Should my gas line be bonded?
Yes, gas piping gets bonded, and CSST, the flexible yellow-jacketed tubing common in newer and remodeled homes, carries its own specific bonding requirements from manufacturers and code because of its vulnerability to lightning-related damage. We check for it during every bonding sweep, and adding a missing CSST bond is a small job compared to what it protects against. Can you ground just one outlet for a computer or TV?
Yes, and it is often the practical middle ground in an older home: a new grounded circuit run to the one wall where your office or entertainment equipment lives. You get a legitimate equipment ground where it matters most without committing to a whole-home retrofit on day one, and the rest can be phased later.
How do you test whether my grounding is any good?
With instruments, not opinions. We verify continuity of the electrode conductor, inspect and exercise the clamp connections, and use meter-based methods to evaluate the earth connection itself. Grounding is a case where looking fine means nothing; the measurements are the inspection, and they go into your written findings.
Does pool equipment have separate grounding rules?
Pools have their own world: an equipotential bonding grid ties the shell, deck, rails, and equipment together so nobody in wet bare feet can bridge a difference in potential.
