Why do all my alarms go off together?
Because they are interconnected, and that is the system working exactly as designed. One unit detected something and signaled the rest, so the alarm reaches sleeping rooms far from the source. Most modern heads indicate which unit initiated, usually with a distinct light, so you can find the origin. If they routinely sound together with no smoke and no cooking nearby, that is a diagnosis visit, not a reason to disconnect anything.
My detector chirps even with a brand-new battery. Why?
Three suspects, in order. First, the head has reached end of life and is announcing it; check the date on the back, and if it is around ten years old, replacement is the fix. Second, the new battery is seated poorly or the drawer is misaligned. Third, and least known, a wiring or connector fault at the base can mimic a battery complaint. If the date is recent and the battery is good, have the wiring checked instead of buying more batteries.
Do I need CO detectors if I have a gas furnace?
Yes. A gas furnace, a gas water heater, or an attached garage each puts a carbon monoxide source under or beside your living space, and CO gives no smell, color, or taste to warn you. Detection belongs near the sleeping areas, and combination smoke-and-CO heads make that easy at the hallway locations. How long do smoke detectors actually last?
About ten years from manufacture, not from installation, and the date is printed on the back of the head. The sensing element degrades with age and dust exposure, and a degraded sensor can still beep proudly at the test button, which only proves the horn and battery work. If you cannot find a date, the unit predates the labeling practice, and that alone makes it old enough to replace.
