The Arizona-specific part
The neutral-wire problem is the Valley’s defining smart home constraint. A good share of older Phoenix-area stock, especially mid-century houses through the central corridors, was wired with switch loops: the switch simply interrupts the hot conductor, and no neutral passes through the box. A smart switch, being a device that must stay powered to stay connected, has nothing to run on. The plate looks identical to any other house’s; the difference is invisible until the plate is off, which is why we never quote smart switch work sight unseen.
When the box has a neutral
Most later construction carries neutrals through switch boxes, and installs go by the book: land, torque, pair, verify. The work is craftsmanship rather than improvisation, and a whole house of switches can move to smart control cleanly.
When it does not
We rank the fixes honestly. Pulling a neutral is the best long-term answer where an accessible path exists. Two more desert notes. Houses from the aluminum branch-circuit era need any device work done with aluminum-rated connectors and correct torque, smart devices included; that is a competence question, not a reason to skip upgrading. And Arizona utility plans reward smart control: scheduling heavy loads around APS and SRP time-of-use windows is exactly what smart switches and controls do well. Heat deserves its own line. Why won’t a smart switch work in my older house?
Almost always the neutral. Many older Valley switch boxes were wired as switch loops with no neutral conductor, and a smart switch needs one to power its own electronics. The fixes, in order of preference: pull a neutral where an accessible path exists, or use a listed no-neutral device designed for exactly this situation. Both beat forcing it. The assessment tells you which fix each box needs before you spend on hardware.
My video doorbell keeps dying. Is the transformer the problem?
Usually. Original doorbell transformers were sized for a button and a bell, not a camera streaming video. The result is a doorbell that browns out, reboots, or drops off the network. A transformer with the capacity the doorbell maker specifies, plus a chime compatibility check, cures most of these cases in a single visit. While we are there, we check the wiring path itself too, since a chafed doorbell wire can mimic transformer trouble.
Do you set up the apps too?

Can a smart dimmer and smart bulbs work together?
Pick one layer to be smart. A smart dimmer chopping power to a smart bulb confuses the bulb’s electronics, causing flicker, dropouts, and odd behavior. Smart bulbs want full constant power controlled in software, or a switch specifically designed to partner with them. We help you choose one architecture per room and wire for it.
Can you make my three-way switches smart?
Yes. Stairway and hallway circuits controlled from two or three locations convert well, but the method depends on what conductors each box contains. Sometimes it is one smart switch plus companion switches; sometimes smart devices at every location. We open the boxes first and quote the version your wiring supports. Multi-way boxes are also where past improvisation surfaces most often, which is why these get quoted after a look, not from a menu.
What is a no-neutral smart switch?
A device engineered to power itself without a neutral conductor, typically by passing a small standing current through the fixture, often with a compatibility hub. Listed versions from serious manufacturers are a legitimate solution for switch-loop houses. Unlisted gadgets promising the same trick are not, and we install only the former.
Do smart switches work with LED lighting?
Good ones do, with matching. Dimmers carry minimum and maximum load ratings, and a very small LED load under a mismatched dimmer flickers or refuses to dim smoothly. We match the switch model to the actual fixtures on the circuit, a small verification step that prevents the most common smart lighting complaint.
Can you put a smart switch outside for patio or landscape lights?
Yes, with outdoor-rated devices in covers rated for dust and monsoon rain, placed with some mercy from the afternoon sun. Interior smart switches do not survive Phoenix patios. The right hardware does, and it makes patio lighting, misters, and holiday circuits genuinely convenient to run on schedules. Placement with some shade also extends the life of any outdoor electronics, and we plan for it.
Will my smart switches work if the internet goes down?
Yes, as switches. Every device we install still controls its load manually at the wall, exactly like the switch it replaced. Automations and remote control pause until the connection returns. That is a design principle worth insisting on: the house has to work fine with the app gone. If a particular automation platform matters to you, tell us which one; ecosystems differ, and we wire so yours has what it needs.
