An ordinary breaker watches for two things: sustained overload and a dead short. Arc faults are a third kind of failure, and they are quieter. What this work involves
An AFCI, short for arc-fault circuit interrupter, is a breaker with electronics inside. It samples the current waveform on the circuit and looks for the ragged signature of an arc, both series arcs along a damaged conductor and parallel arcs between conductors. When it recognizes one, it opens the circuit before the arc has time to become ignition. Overload and short-circuit protection stay built in; the arc detection rides on top.

The Arizona-specific part
Most of the Valley predates arc-fault protection entirely. The mid-1960s through early-1970s corridors of central Phoenix, Tempe, and Glendale, the 1980s and 1990s tract belts of Chandler, Gilbert, and Peoria, and even the post-2000 builds farther out mostly went in before today’s expanded AFCI expectations. That is not a defect to panic over. Attic heat writes the risk profile

The aluminum-wiring caveat

An AFCI adds a detection layer that ordinary breakers cannot offer, and that layer is worth having. It is not a repair. Aluminum circuits still need properly rated connectors and correct torque at every device, and we say so rather than selling a breaker as a cure.
One honest limit: legacy panels. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco platforms have no listed AFCI breakers, so the homes that would benefit most from modern protection sometimes cannot get it without a larger panel conversation. We will tell you which side of that line your panel sits on, in writing, without turning it into a pitch.
If budget forces choices, we stage the retrofit in the order the risk runs: bedrooms first, since sleeping rooms are where early detection buys the most, then the living and family rooms carrying the most cord-connected load, then hallways and the rest. What does an AFCI actually protect against?
Fires that start from arcing: damaged cords, nicked or aging cable inside walls, and loose terminations at outlets and fixtures. These faults draw current in amounts an ordinary breaker reads as normal, so they can throw heat indefinitely without tripping anything. The AFCI recognizes the electrical signature of the arc itself and opens the circuit before heat becomes ignition.
Are AFCIs required in my older home?
Existing wiring is generally not forced to retrofit; requirements attach when new work happens. Extend a circuit, add outlets, or open walls in a remodel, and current code typically brings AFCI protection along with it. Retrofitting voluntarily is allowed anytime, and in pre-AFCI housing stock it is one of the better safety moves available.
Why does my AFCI trip when the vacuum runs?
Brushed motors in vacuums and some treadmills produce electrical noise that early AFCI generations sometimes read as arcing, and newer breakers discriminate much better. But do not assume compatibility is the whole story. A worn cord or a loose plug connection on that same vacuum produces genuine arcing, which the breaker is right to catch. We measure rather than guess.
What is the difference between AFCI and GFCI?
Different hazards. AFCI watches for arcing, which starts fires. GFCI watches for current leaking out of the circuit, which is what shocks people. Code generally wants AFCI where people sleep and live, GFCI where water lives, and in some rooms both at once.
Can one breaker do both jobs?

Should I use an AFCI breaker or an AFCI receptacle?
The breaker protects the entire circuit, including the cable inside the walls, which is where the faults you cannot see live. A receptacle-type AFCI protects itself and whatever is wired downstream of it. Where listed AFCI breakers exist for the panel, the breaker is usually the better instrument. Receptacle AFCIs earn their place where panel options do not exist.
Can my Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel take AFCI breakers?

Do AFCIs help with aluminum wiring?
As a detection layer, yes. Loose aluminum terminations fail by arcing, which is the exact signature an AFCI listens for. But detection is not remediation. Aluminum branch circuits still need rated connectors and correct torque at their terminations, and an AFCI should be treated as a smoke alarm for the wiring, not a repair of it.
How often should I test them, and what if one will not reset?
Press the test button monthly; the breaker should trip immediately and then reset firmly. One that will not reset is either doing its job on a live fault or has failed internally, and both possibilities deserve a diagnosis rather than repeated forcing. Leave it off and call.
