A panel upgrade is the least glamorous project a Phoenix house can take on, and one of the most consequential. Nobody shows off a new load center. But the EV charger, the spa, the shop tools, and the addition all stand in line behind it, and in this metro that line has gotten long.

What this work involves

Some homes that feel starved calculate out fine and need a subpanel or a dedicated circuit instead. Some homes that feel fine calculate out with zero headroom for the EV already in the driveway. The number decides, not the pitch.

The Arizona-specific part
The Valley’s upgrade triggers are specific. The EV charger is the big one: Level 2 charging is a large continuous load, and on many 100-amp services the load calculation says no before anyone prices a circuit. Spas, shop equipment, and additions run the same math. A growing number of upgrades start with a letter instead, from an insurer flagging a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel; those platforms, common in 1960s-to-1980s stock, have widely documented reliability problems, and carriers act on that documentation. And the 1980s and 1990s tract belts in Chandler, Gilbert, and Peoria supply the quietest trigger of all: sound panels that are simply full at capacity age.
Solar is the constraint that surprises people. Metro Phoenix has some of the highest rooftop solar adoption in the country, and a bus that takes PV backfeed has to satisfy the NEC 120% busbar rule: the main breaker and the solar breaker together cannot exceed the bus rating by more than that allowance. In practice the rule shapes which panel we install, where the solar breaker lands, and sometimes what main-breaker rating buys the headroom. We do not sell or install solar, which means we have no incentive except getting it right; we coordinate the panel side so the PV stays legal and the paperwork keeps matching reality.
Utility geography matters too. Most of the metro splits between APS and SRP, sometimes street by street; parts of Mesa run on the city’s own electric utility; ED3 serves the Maricopa area. Each sets its own rules for the disconnect and reconnect an upgrade requires, and we run that calendar so you are not the one on hold. Do I need 200 amps?
Only the load calculation knows, and we run it before quoting rather than after. Plenty of Valley homes do fine on 100 or 125 amps until an EV or a spa arrives, and some never need more. The calc takes square footage, fixed appliances, HVAC, and planned loads and produces a defensible number. If that number says you do not need the upgrade, that is exactly what we will tell you.
How long is my power off on swap day?
Plan on a good portion of the working day without power. The honest variables are the utility’s disconnect and reconnect windows and whatever the old panel reveals when it opens. What never varies is that the outage is planned and stated in writing beforehand, so the refrigerator, the home office, and any medical equipment get arranged around it rather than surprised by it.
Does insurance care about my old panel?
Increasingly, yes. Federal Pacific and Zinsco platforms have widely documented problems, and insurers flag them at renewal and at purchase. Some carriers ask for replacement, others accept an inspection letter. An upgrade closes the question permanently, and the permit and inspection records from the job are precisely the documentation a carrier wants to see.
Can the new panel go where the old one is?
Usually, and it is the cheapest path. Sometimes working-clearance rules, a bad original location, or a remodel argue for moving it, and occasionally the utility’s service point drives the decision. When relocation is on the table it appears as its own priced line in the quote, so you can see the fork instead of wondering about it.
What is a load calculation, really?
Code-method arithmetic, not vibes. Square footage sets a base demand, fixed appliances and HVAC add theirs, and large continuous loads like EV charging are counted the conservative way the code requires. The result is the service size your house needs. It protects you in both directions: no buying amps you will never use, and no discovering missing amps after the concrete decisions are made.
How does solar change the upgrade?
It constrains the equipment. A backfed bus has to respect the NEC 120% rule, so the bus rating, the main breaker, and the solar breaker have to work as a set, and done wrong it can put your interconnection agreement out of compliance. We coordinate the panel choice around the PV you have. We do not sell solar, so we have no dog in that fight beyond correctness.

Will an upgrade fix my flickering lights or tripping breakers?
Only if capacity or the panel platform was the cause, and sometimes it is. But an upgrade does not automatically cure a loose connection in one circuit or a single overloaded kitchen run; those are repair and troubleshooting jobs at a fraction of the scope. We diagnose first so you buy the fix for the problem you actually have, not the biggest product adjacent to it.
Is a bigger panel automatically safer?
No. Correct is the safety feature, not big. A modern panel with sound buses, listed breakers matched to their wires, proper torque, and honest labeling is the safety story at any service size, and an oversized service on a house that never needed it bought nothing. If someone is selling amps as safety, ask to see the load calculation.
