The Arizona-specific part
Phoenix panels sort cleanly by era. Mid-1960s to early-1970s homes in central Phoenix, Tempe, and the Glendale corridors can carry aluminum branch wiring, which needs aluminum-rated connectors and correct torque where it lands in the panel. That era, running into the 1980s, is also where Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels appear. How do I know what panel brand I have?
Open the outer door, just the door, and look for a brand on the label or stamped in the metal. Square D, Eaton, Siemens, and GE are common modern names. Federal Pacific panels usually say Stab-Lok inside the door, and Zinsco breakers often have distinctive colored handles. If the label is missing or painted over, a clear photo of the closed panel and the breaker faces is usually enough for us to identify the platform before we arrive.
Are Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels really a problem?
They have widely documented reliability problems, and insurers and inspectors flag them. That is the accurate framing, and it is serious without being theatrical. The documented concern is breakers that may not trip reliably when called on. It does not mean your specific panel is failing today; it means the platform has earned a real inspection and, for most owners, a planned upgrade on your schedule rather than an emergency on the panel’s schedule.
What does a full panel replacement cost depend on?
Service size, whether service entrance equipment changes with it, panel location, circuit count, the breaker types current code requires for the circuits being relanded, the permit jurisdiction, and whether solar backfeed constrains the equipment choice under the 120% busbar rule. What size is my electrical service?
The number on the main breaker handle is the quick answer, commonly 100, 125, 150, or 200 amps in Valley homes.
