Can you wire my garage for a workshop?
Yes, and it is one of our favorite requests because the loads are concrete: saws, compressors, dust collection, chargers, and lighting worth working under. Most garages get a mix of dedicated 240-volt equipment circuits and additional 20-amp receptacle circuits, and busy shops often justify a small subpanel so the garage stops borrowing capacity from the kitchen. Does new wiring need a permit in Phoenix?
Typically yes. Added circuits are permit-triggering work in metro cities, and county permits apply in unincorporated areas. Like-for-like repairs often skip the permit, but this page is about new runs, and new runs get paperwork. Should outside wiring run in conduit or cable?
Exposed outdoor runs belong in conduit rated for the location, with fittings that seal against dust and rain. Cable has its place inside walls, ceilings, and attics, and certain rated cable can be buried, but sunlight and physical exposure chew up unprotected cable fast in this climate. When you see bare cable stapled across an exterior wall, you are looking at a shortcut, and shortcuts age badly outdoors here.
Can you run power to a casita or ADU?
Yes. A casita is a small house, and it gets fed like one: a properly sized feeder from the main panel to a subpanel in the casita, then branch circuits for cooling, kitchen, bath, and general use. The feeder sizing accounts for the run length and the real load list, and the permit covers the whole scope. Done right, the casita never flickers when the main house is busy.
When does a detached building need a subpanel?
When it has more than trivial loads or more than one circuit’s worth of future. A single light and outlet can ride one circuit from the house. The moment you are talking about equipment, cooling, or several receptacle runs, a feeder and subpanel are cleaner, safer, and easier to expand, and code limits how many separate supply circuits can serve a detached structure anyway. The subpanel also gives the building its own disconnect, which you will appreciate the first time something needs service.
Can you add wiring for a room addition?
Yes, and timing is everything. The ideal moment is at framing, before insulation and drywall, when routing is fast and clean. We coordinate with your builder on rough-in and come back for trim-out after surfaces close. If the addition is already finished, it becomes fishing work like any other retrofit, still very doable, just slower. Either way the addition’s circuits are designed to current code, including the protection requirements the rest of the house may predate.
How does new wire get across the house without opening walls?
The attic does the heavy lifting. Runs travel from the panel up into the attic, across to the destination, and down inside a wall cavity to a cut-in box. Insulation gets moved and replaced, not trampled. The tricky spots are interior walls with blocking and any run that must cross a vaulted ceiling, which is where an experienced eye on the route survey saves both drywall and money.
Do backyard circuits have to be buried, and how deep?
Underground runs follow code burial rules, and the required depth depends on the wiring method: conduit generally earns a shallower trench than direct-burial cable, and the rules shift under driveways or patios. Trench depth is not a place to improvise, because a shovel or a rototiller will eventually find a shallow line. The written scope names the method, the depth, and who digs.
What size wire will a new circuit use?
The load and the distance decide, not preference. Wire gauge follows the breaker size and the circuit’s job, then gets bumped when a long run or a hot attic would otherwise let voltage sag or push conductors past their comfortable operating temperature. Bigger than required is sometimes smart engineering on a long feeder; smaller than required is never anything but a hazard, which is why sizing comes from the code tables and the nameplate data, not from what is on the truck.
