Why do my LEDs flicker on the dimmer?
Usually the dimmer, not the bulbs. Older dimmers were designed for heavy incandescent loads, and a handful of efficient LEDs can sit below the dimmer’s minimum load, so the light stutters. The fix is a dimmer listed for LED, checked against the manufacturer’s compatibility list. If flicker shows up with the dimmer at full, we go hunting for a connection problem instead.
What color temperature should I pick?
As a starting point: 2700K reads warm and relaxed for living rooms and bedrooms, 3000K reads clean in kitchens and baths without going cold, and 4000K suits garages and workshops. The stronger rule is consistency. Mixing temperatures inside one room is what makes lighting feel off even when nobody can say why.
Can you light a room with no ceiling fixture?
Yes, and there is a menu. We can fish new ceiling points from the attic, add low-profile recessed lighting, mount wall fixtures where framing allows, or wire switched outlets so lamps come on at the door. Which option wins depends on framing, insulation, and how the room is used. Switched outlets are often the least invasive first move, and lamps on them can be dimmed too.
Do I need a lighting designer?
For most homes, no. Planning layers room by room is part of how we scope the work, and it serves the large majority of houses well. On custom remodels that already have a designer or architect involved, we are glad to build exactly what their plan calls for. Either way the electrical scope stays in writing, so design decisions never blur into wiring surprises.
Is it worth converting the whole house to LED at once?
In this climate, usually yes. You cut the fixture wattage and the cooling load it creates at the same time, and doing the house as one project keeps color temperature and dimmer pairing consistent instead of accumulating one mismatched room per year. Are smart switches better than smart bulbs?
For most rooms, control the switch, not the bulb. A smart switch keeps every bulb on the circuit ordinary and keeps the wall working the way guests expect. Smart bulbs go dark and unreachable the moment someone flips the switch off, and someone always does.
Can you add dimmers to my existing lights?
Usually, yes. We verify the load type, confirm the box has room and a neutral where the dimmer wants one, and use dimmers listed for the fixtures on the circuit. Fans and some fluorescent fixtures need purpose-built controls rather than a standard lamp dimmer. Where a three-way pair runs the room, both ends get compatible devices so the circuit behaves from either door.
What is the difference between lumens and watts?
Lumens measure light output; watts measure power draw. Incandescent bulbs trained everyone to shop by watts, but LED breaks that link. Shop lumens first for brightness, then color temperature for feel, and let wattage become the footnote it deserves to be.
How disruptive is new lighting wiring to walls and ceilings?
Less than most people fear, more than zero. With attic access we can often fish new points with small, patchable openings. Where framing blocks the clean route, we say so up front, and any drywall repair lands in the written quote instead of arriving as a surprise. Rooms under open attic are usually the easy path; two-story spaces and vaulted ceilings take more planning, and we will tell you which kind of house you have before anyone commits.
