The Arizona-specific part

Phoenix is hard on the device layer in ways milder climates never are. Why did my outlet just stop working?

Three usual suspects, in order: a tripped GFCI upstream that protects that outlet, a tripped breaker, or a failed connection at the device itself or at the previous one on the run. Check for a GFCI reset button in the bathrooms, kitchen, and garage first, then the panel. If resets do not bring it back, stop there; a dead outlet with no tripped protection usually means a connection failed somewhere, and that deserves a real diagnostic look rather than a shrug.

Are USB outlets worth it?

For kitchen counters, nightstands, and desks, usually yes. A built-in USB or USB-C port frees the receptacle faces and beats a wall of adapter bricks. Quality varies a lot between models, and charging standards keep evolving, so we lean toward good-grade devices in the handful of places you charge daily rather than USB everywhere. It is an easy add during any other device work while the box is already open.

What is a backstabbed outlet?

An outlet where the wires were pushed into spring-grip holes in the back instead of being wrapped around the screw terminals. It was a production-line shortcut, and the spring contact is the weakest common termination in residential wiring. Decades of load and heat cycling loosen it until outlets flicker or a whole run goes dead. The fix is re-landing the same conductors on the screws or replacing the device with a better one.

How do I tell whether the device failed or the circuit did?

From outside, you mostly cannot, which is the honest answer. Patterns help: one device misbehaving alone suggests the device; several outlets acting up together, symptoms that come and go with hot afternoons, or anything involving warmth or smell points upstream. We test rather than guess, because replacing a healthy device on a faulty circuit fixes nothing and hides the evidence for a while.

Do I need tamper-resistant outlets if I do not have kids?

Current code calls for tamper-resistant receptacles in homes regardless of who lives there, so the replacements we install are generally TR. The internal shutters add real protection and cost little. If a new TR outlet feels stiff, that is the shutters doing their job; plugs go in straight, and quality devices ease up with normal use.

Why does my dimmer feel slightly warm?

Dimmers shed a little heat in normal operation, so mild warmth on a dimmer running a healthy load can be normal within its rating. The line we care about: warmth on a plain switch or receptacle is never normal, and any device that is hot rather than faintly warm, or that smells, is a call-now item, dimmer included. When in doubt, we would rather check a healthy device than miss a cooking one.

What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI protection?

GFCI watches for current leaking out of the circuit, the shock hazard, and belongs where water lives: kitchens, baths, garages, outside. AFCI watches for the electrical signature of arcing, the fire hazard, and belongs in living and sleeping areas. They solve different problems, and dual-function devices and breakers exist for the places where code wants both answered at once.

Do outlets and switches wear out on their own?

Yes. They are mechanical parts with springs and contacts, cycled constantly for decades, in a climate that bakes them half the year. Grip weakens, mechanisms get crunchy, faces crack and discolor. There is no fixed replacement interval, but weak grip, intermittent operation, or any visible heat damage means the device has reached the end of its life regardless of its age.

Can you refresh every device in the house in one visit?
