What this work involves

The Arizona-specific part

A pool can run beautifully for years in that condition, which is exactly the problem, because nothing about the water tells you the protection behind it has decayed.
Bonding is the part Arizona inspectors rightly obsess over. Equipotential bonding per NEC 680 is a genuine inspection point here, not a checkbox, and it deserves the attention: the grid does its work invisibly, protects even when no component has failed, and cannot be judged by whether the pool seems fine. Desert conditions add their own pressures. Equipment pads sit in full sun, often on the west side where afternoon exposure is worst; insulation dries and cracks, boxes warp, and GFCIs age faster in sustained heat, so we spec wet-location, sun-tolerant hardware and place what can be placed out of the west sun.
Permits round it out. Spa installs and new pool circuits typically need a city permit, or a county one in unincorporated pockets like Sun City and San Tan Valley, and the inspection that follows is one we genuinely welcome: it is a second set of eyes on the net that holds your swimmers. At inspection, expect attention on the bonding grid, the ground-fault protection, and the disconnect placement, the three places where paper rules meet water. Bonding, plainly
Bonding ties every conductive thing near the water to every other one, so no voltage difference can exist between the rail your hand is on and the water your body is in. It protects even when nothing has failed.
GFCI, plainly
A GFCI compares current going out with current coming back. A tiny imbalance means electricity is leaking somewhere it should not be, possibly through a person, and the device cuts power in a fraction of a second.

What is bonding and why does my inspector care so much?
Bonding connects everything conductive around the pool, motors, rails, ladders, shell steel, nearby metal, into one grid at one electrical potential, so a swimmer can never bridge a voltage difference. Inspectors care because it is invisible once finished and life-critical when needed; NEC 680 makes it a required, inspected element of pool electrical, not an optional extra.

My pool light is out. Is that dangerous?
Treat it as unknown until inspected. Many dead pool lights are just failed lamps or tripped protection, but wet-niche fixtures can also fail by letting water reach connections, which is the one scenario nobody should swim above. Leave it off and have it checked. Converting to low-voltage LED removes most of the underwater risk permanently and is worth pricing while we are already there.
Does pool equipment really need GFCI protection?
Modern code expects GFCI protection on pool pump circuits and most equipment around the water, and older pads frequently predate those requirements. Grandfathering means nobody forces the retrofit; physics grandfathers nothing. Adding protection to an older pad is one of the highest-value corrections we make at pools, and it is usually modest in scope. If your pad predates the requirement, ask for that retrofit price alongside whatever repair brought us out.
Why does my pump breaker trip on summer afternoons?
Heat stacks. The breaker sits in a hot enclosure, the motor works hard, and breakers are thermal devices, so a baking afternoon narrows their margin. Sometimes the cause is real and electrical: a failing motor drawing high current or a termination heating up. It is diagnosable either way, and the one wrong answer is a bigger breaker, which just removes the protection while keeping the problem.
Can you convert my old pool light to low-voltage LED?
Usually yes, and it is one of the best safety-per-effort upgrades a pool can get: a transformer takes line voltage out of the niche, energy use drops, and the underwater fixture stops being the scariest device on the property. The conversion must be done with listed parts, the correct transformer, and junctions where code puts them, which is why it is electrician scope rather than a pool-store afternoon.
Do I need a permit for spa wiring?
Typically yes. A new spa circuit is exactly the kind of work Valley cities permit and inspect, and unincorporated areas route through the county instead. Treat that as a feature: the inspection is a second set of eyes on bonding, protection, and disconnect placement around water your family sits in. My pool is older. Should the electrical be looked at even if everything works?
That is precisely the pool that should be looked at. Working is not the same as protected: older pads commonly show corroded bonding lugs, sun-brittled insulation, missing GFCI protection, and disconnects that predate current placement rules. A pad inspection produces a written, prioritized list, hazards first and someday items labeled honestly, and you set the pace from there.
Can you wire pool automation and controls?
Yes. Automation panels, relays for pumps and lights, salt systems, and the low-voltage control side all land in our scope, wired to their listings and kept properly separated from line voltage.
