Do I need a Type 1 or a Type 2 surge protector?

For most homes, a Type 2 device at the load center is the right call and the standard play. Type 1 devices, installed on the line side of the main disconnect, earn their place on services with heavy exposure or specific configurations. We recommend from your panel and your service, not from a one-size answer.

Will it protect my AC and my solar inverter?

The panel device clamps surges for everything fed from that panel, which includes the condenser, the air handler, and the inverter connection on the AC side. Inverters also carry internal protections, and the PV side of the array is its own subject. We protect the panel side and coordinate around the solar rather than pretending it is not there. If your inverter manufacturer specifies additional protection, we install to that spec as well.

How do I know the device is still working?

Every unit we install has status indication, usually lights, sometimes with monitoring. After a major storm night, glance at it.
