What this work involves
Adding a device is a small project with a real design step in front of it. Power has to come from somewhere, and which circuit can legally host a new outlet matters as much as where the outlet lands. Can you add outlets to my patio?
Yes, and it is one of the most requested installs we run. Patio receptacles get weather-resistant devices, in-use covers, and GFCI protection, fed either from a nearby interior circuit with spare capacity or from a new run when the load justifies it. Grill walls, fan-and-mister corners, and string-light points all count as real placements worth marking out during the walk.
What outlets survive outside in Phoenix?
Weather-resistant rated receptacles inside gasketed, in-use covers, mounted out of direct west sun whenever the wall allows. The cover matters as much as the device: it keeps dust and monsoon rain off the contacts while something is plugged in. Bargain covers crack and yellow quickly in this sun; the extra-duty ones are the spec for a reason, and they are what we stock.
How many outlets can one circuit take?
Residential code does not set a hard count; capacity and use decide. A string of rarely used bedroom receptacles is a different animal from a bench circuit running power tools or an office wall running computers and monitors. We look at what already lives on the circuit and what you plan to plug in, then either host the new outlet there or recommend a fresh run. The wrong answer is stacking loads until the breaker referees.
Can you add an outlet without cutting the wall apart?
Often, yes. If power exists in the same stud bay, or directly above or below, an old-work box and a short fish mean one clean device-sized opening and nothing more. Longer routes may need a small access cut or two, and the quote says where before anything is cut. Block walls are the exception; they get conduit or raceway, planned openly rather than discovered halfway.
What does code want over kitchen counters?
Receptacles spaced along the counter so no point of the work surface sits far from one, with GFCI protection throughout. It is a small job that permanently retires the worst ladder trip of the year, and those outlets earn their keep running patio and landscape lighting through the other seasons.
Do garage outlets have to be GFCI protected?
Under current code, garage receptacles generally get GFCI protection, including the ones feeding refrigerators and freezers. Older homes were built to looser expectations, so a garage full of unprotected outlets is a normal find and a reasonable thing to correct while we are adding new ones. Modern GFCIs hold appliance loads far more gracefully than their early reputation suggests.
Can you install a floor outlet?
Yes, using a listed floor box rated for the purpose, never a wall receptacle laid sideways at ankle height. Floor boxes solve the furniture-island problem in big rooms where no wall sits near the sofa.
