Residential HVAC across the Valley.

Air conditioning, heating, and cooler work at homes across the Phoenix metro.

01Overview

Heat strip repair fixes the electric auxiliary heat inside a heat pump air handler or package unit. You need it when emergency heat stays on, the house blows cold in heat mode, breakers trip, or winter bills jump without a clear reason. We test the controls and strips, then quote the repair in writing before work starts.

02Auxiliary heat

Auxiliary heat is simple until the controls get it wrong

Heat strips are electric resistance heaters. In a heat pump system, they help when the heat pump cannot satisfy the call by itself, during defrost, or when emergency heat is selected. The strips themselves are not complicated, but the control chain around them can be. Thermostats, relays, sequencers, limits, breakers, wiring, air handlers, and package-unit boards all decide when those strips energize and how much heat they add.

In the Phoenix metro, many homeowners barely think about auxiliary heat until the emergency heat light appears or the utility bill looks wrong. A stuck sequencer can keep strips energized longer than needed. A failed strip can leave the home blowing lukewarm air when the heat pump needs backup. A weak blower or dirty coil can overheat the strip bank and trip limits. Loose electrical connections can burn terminals and create intermittent failures.

This is not a part we guess at. Electric heat draws heavy current, so the diagnosis has to include voltage, amp draw, control signals, airflow, and safety limits. The question is not only whether the strip heats. The question is whether it heats at the correct time, in the correct stages, with enough airflow across it, and shuts off when the call ends.

Yeti Pros is veteran-owned and operated. We repair heat strips and auxiliary heat across Phoenix and the Valley as a service-area business. We come to you. For broader heat pump issues, see our heat pump repair service.

03How it runs

How the job actually goes

The visit starts at the thermostat and the equipment. We ask what you saw: emergency heat light, cold air, breaker trip, burning smell, high bill, or heat that only works in one mode. Then we confirm the system type, thermostat setup, air handler or package-unit location, breaker size, heat strip kit, and control wiring. A wrong thermostat setting or miswired auxiliary stage can create symptoms that look like a failed strip.

We test in steps. That can include verifying thermostat output, checking low-voltage calls, measuring line voltage, checking amp draw by strip stage, inspecting sequencers or relays, checking limits, inspecting wiring and terminals, and confirming blower operation. If a heat strip is open, we identify it. If the strip is good but never gets the call, the control problem is upstream. If the strip energizes but airflow is weak, the repair may involve blower or restriction work.

Before the repair begins, we give a flat-rate written quote after the in-person look. The quoted number is what you pay unless we find something and stop to re-quote. We do not swap parts until the control path makes sense. On electric heat, careless part changing can leave the original problem in place.

Once approved, we replace the failed component, tighten and correct electrical connections, secure wiring, verify staging, and test the system through heat pump and auxiliary heat operation. We check that the strips shut off when they should. Cleanup includes removing old parts and leaving the panel area closed and safe.

At handoff, we explain what failed, why the symptom happened, and what readings confirmed the repair. Our office hours are Mon-Fri 8-5, and 24/7 emergency service is available. Call (520) 556-8929. AZ ROC #363372 · ROC #363423.

04What

What the symptoms usually point to

Heat strip problems often feel like thermostat problems because the warning shows up on the wall. The actual failure may be in the air handler, package unit, breaker panel, or control board. This table shows the common split.

What you notice What it usually means Heat strip repair or something else?
Emergency heat light stays on Thermostat setting, heat pump fault, defrost issue, or auxiliary control problem Diagnosis first; may be heat strip controls
Heat pump runs but air feels cool Normal mild heat, refrigerant issue, failed auxiliary heat, or bad staging Could be heat pump or strip failure
Breaker trips in heat mode Shorted strip, loose wiring, weak breaker, or damaged sequencer Likely electrical heat inspection
Burning smell when heat starts Dust burnoff, overheated strip bank, wiring issue, or airflow restriction Needs inspection if smell is sharp or persistent
Utility bill jumps during mild weather Auxiliary heat running too much or stuck on Often sequencer, controls, thermostat, or heat pump fault
05Phoenix specific

Phoenix-metro realities for heat strips

Heat pumps are common in the Phoenix metro because cooling carries most of the workload. The heat side may sit idle for months, then get used on cold mornings when everyone expects it to work without complaint. That long idle period can hide failed sequencers, corroded terminals, weak relays, and thermostat programming problems.

Arizona homes are slab-on-grade, with no basements. Air handlers and ducts often live in attics or closets, and ducts in Valley attics can be surrounded by 150°F+ summer air. That heat bakes insulation, wiring, plastic connectors, control boards, and blower components even when the heat strips are not energized. By winter, an electrical connection that spent the summer aging in an attic may show up as a heat-mode failure.

Dust matters too. Monsoon dust, remodeling dust, dirty filters, and attic leakage can load coils and restrict airflow. Heat strips need airflow across them. If the blower is weak or the filter is packed, the strip bank can overheat and trip limits. Replacing a strip without solving airflow can bring the same problem back.

Package units add another layer because the heat strip kit and controls are outside in the equipment cabinet. Wind-driven dust and moisture can affect terminals and boards. Thermostat wiring also matters. A heat pump thermostat set up wrong can call for auxiliary heat at the wrong time or keep emergency heat active. For a deeper look at that warning, read our emergency heat light guide.

The honest approach is to test the whole chain: thermostat, board, sequencer, strip, limits, airflow, and heat pump performance. In Phoenix and the Valley, auxiliary heat should help when needed. It should not secretly become the main heating source because another problem was missed.

06What drives

What drives the quote

The quote depends on the system type, access, number of heat strip stages, whether the failure is the strip, sequencer, relay, breaker, wiring, thermostat setup, or airflow-related limit issue. A simple failed sequencer is different from burned wiring inside a crowded attic air handler. A package unit with weathered controls can take different parts and labor than an indoor air handler.

We give flat-rate written quotes after an in-person look. The quoted number is what you pay unless we find something and stop to re-quote. The diagnostic or service-call fee is disclosed at booking and credited toward the repair. That applies whether the fix is a strip, control, wiring correction, or another heat pump issue found during testing.

Yeti Pros provides a 2-YEAR written workmanship warranty. Repair parts carry a 1-YEAR manufacturer parts warranty. Work is held to the AZ ROC Minimum Workmanship Standards. Financing is available where larger repair or replacement decisions make sense, and we offer a 10% military, veteran & first responder discount. Stuck sequencers cut both ways. Strips that never engage leave the house cold on the few mornings that matter; strips that never release run silently alongside the compressor and show up only as a power bill that doubled — which is why we test the full staging sequence, not just whether warm air comes out.

07Straight answers

Straight answers

Why is my emergency heat light on?

It may be on because the thermostat is set to emergency heat, the heat pump needs auxiliary help, defrost is active, or the system has a fault that pushed it into backup heat. We test the thermostat signals and equipment response before blaming the heat strips. The warning is useful, but it is not the full diagnosis.

Can bad heat strips raise my electric bill?

Yes, especially if the strips are stuck on, called too often, or covering for a heat pump that is not heating correctly. Electric resistance heat uses much more power than normal heat pump operation. A sequencer fault, thermostat setup issue, or outdoor-unit problem can all make auxiliary heat run longer than it should.

Is a tripped heat-strip breaker dangerous?

A tripped breaker means the circuit saw a problem or overload. Do not keep resetting it. Heat strips draw heavy current, and repeated trips can point to a shorted element, damaged wiring, weak breaker, or burned terminal. We inspect the circuit and equipment before putting it back into service.

Do you repair heat strips after hours?

Yes, 24/7 emergency service is available, and regular office hours are Mon-Fri 8-5. Call (520) 556-8929 to book. The diagnostic or service-call fee is disclosed at booking and credited toward the repair. You can also reach us through contact Yeti Pros.
