Auxiliary heat is simple until the controls get it wrong
Heat strips are electric resistance heaters. In a heat pump system, they help when the heat pump cannot satisfy the call by itself, during defrost, or when emergency heat is selected. Why is my emergency heat light on?
It may be on because the thermostat is set to emergency heat, the heat pump needs auxiliary help, defrost is active, or the system has a fault that pushed it into backup heat. Can bad heat strips raise my electric bill?
Yes, especially if the strips are stuck on, called too often, or covering for a heat pump that is not heating correctly. Electric resistance heat uses much more power than normal heat pump operation. Is a tripped heat-strip breaker dangerous?
