When Monsoon Humidity Gets Inside.

Monsoon humidity gets inside when the AC has to remove moisture and heat at the same time, often through attic ducts sitting in 150°F+ air. The one action that matters most is checking whether the system is running long enough with strong airflow. Short cycles, dirty filters, and duct leaks leave the house cool-ish but sticky.

What actually happens

Phoenix homes are built around dry heat, then monsoon season changes the rules for several sticky weeks. The AC still has to lower air temperature, but now it also has to pull water vapor out of the air. Moisture removal happens at the indoor coil. Warm humid return air crosses a cold coil. Water condenses on the metal, runs into the drain pan, and leaves through the condensate drain.

That process needs time and airflow. If the system starts, runs briefly, and shuts off, the coil may get cold but not stay wet long enough to remove much moisture. The room temperature may drop a little while the air still feels heavy. If the filter is dirty or the blower is weak, not enough air crosses the coil. If the coil is too cold because of low airflow, it can sweat heavily or even ice. If the condensate drain is restricted, moisture that should leave the house can become a pan, float switch, or ceiling problem.

  • Watch run time, not just temperature. If the AC runs for only a few minutes at a time and the house feels sticky, the system may be short cycling or oversized for the current load.
  • Look at supply vents and nearby drywall. Sweating around one vent can be a local insulation or boot-sealing issue. Sweating around many vents suggests broader humidity or airflow trouble.
  • Keep interior doors reasonable. Closed doors can starve return airflow if rooms do not have transfer paths. That can change pressure and pull attic air through leaks.
  • Use bath and kitchen exhaust with judgment. Exhaust fans remove moisture at the source, but long runs can also pull replacement air through leaks. Use them while showering or cooking, then shut them off.
  • Do not set the thermostat extremely low. A lower setting can increase run time, but it can also make vents colder and raise condensation risk if airflow or insulation is already poor.
  • Check the condensate drain area. Look for water in the secondary pan, a tripped float switch, algae growth near the drain outlet, or new stains. Do not ignore water near indoor equipment.
