Excessive-heat-warning weeks punish an AC by removing its rest periods. The one action that matters most is giving the system clean airflow before the hardest afternoons arrive. A clean filter, open returns, shaded thermostat, and sane temperature setting do more for survival than panic-lowering the thermostat when the house is already behind.

What actually happens

An air conditioner does not create cold. It moves heat from inside the house to outside. During a normal summer day, the system cycles. It runs, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off, and rests.
