What’s actually happening
A heat pump heats the house by moving heat, not by making heat the way a furnace does. In heating mode, the outdoor coil becomes the cold coil. It pulls heat out of outdoor air and sends that heat indoors through the refrigerant circuit. That sounds backward until you remember that cold outdoor air still contains usable heat.
Because the outdoor coil is cold in heat mode, moisture can freeze on it. The system has a built-in defrost cycle to clear that frost. During defrost, the reversing valve shifts the unit briefly into cooling operation so hot refrigerant can melt ice off the outdoor coil. The outdoor fan may stop. Steam may rise from the unit. You may hear a whoosh or shift in sound. Indoor air can feel cooler for a few minutes unless the auxiliary heat strips come on to temper it.
That short cool-air window is normal. What is not normal is a heat pump that blows cool air for a long time, never warms the supply air, trips the breaker, grows heavy ice, or runs constantly while the house temperature drops. - Check the thermostat mode. Make sure it says heat, not cool or fan only. If the thermostat has separate auxiliary or emergency heat settings, do not flip through modes repeatedly. Set it plainly and watch what happens.
- Replace weak thermostat batteries. Low batteries can cause odd staging or blank-screen behavior. Use fresh batteries if the thermostat takes them.
- Look at the breaker once. If the indoor or outdoor breaker is tripped, reset it one time only. If it trips again, leave it off. A second trip is information, not an invitation to keep trying.
- Check the air filter. A packed filter can starve the indoor coil and heat strips of airflow. Replace it with the correct size and airflow direction. Do not run the system without a filter.
- Look for a float switch. Some air handlers have a condensate safety switch that shuts equipment down when a drain backs up. If the thermostat is blank or the system is dead, water in the pan may be involved.
- Confirm the outdoor disconnect is in place. Do not open the cabinet. Just check that the pullout or switch at the outdoor unit has not been removed or turned off.
- Open supply vents and return paths. Closed vents and blocked returns reduce airflow. Heat pumps need steady air volume across the indoor coil.
Do not open electrical panels inside the unit. Capacitors can hold charge after power is off. Refrigerant work requires proper tools and licensing. If the system has gas backup heat, keep the gas valve as you found it unless you smell gas or have an emergency reason to shut it off.
When to stop and call
Stop running the heat pump if the breaker trips twice, the outdoor unit is locked in heavy ice, the compressor makes harsh starts, the indoor air never warms, or the house temperature keeps falling while the system runs. Continuing to run it can turn a control problem into a compressor problem. It can also waste power fast, especially if electric auxiliary heat is fighting a heat pump that is not moving heat.

What the fix usually involves
The cheap end of this repair can be simple: thermostat setup, a failed sensor, a weak contactor, a dirty filter, a clogged drain switch, or a damaged low-voltage connection. Those repairs are usually straightforward once the cause is proven. They still need testing afterward, because a heat pump can appear fixed while the defrost or auxiliary stage still behaves wrong.

For a few minutes, yes. During defrost, the system may feel like it switched to cooling while it clears frost from the outdoor coil. Warm air should return after the cycle. If the vents stay cool, the house drops, or defrost seems constant, something is wrong.
Should I switch to emergency heat?
Use emergency heat when the heat pump cannot keep up or the outdoor unit is iced, damaged, or not running. It uses electric resistance heat, so it can raise the power bill quickly. It is a temporary setting, not a repair.
Why does the outdoor unit steam in heat mode?
