Somewhere in the Phoenix metro right now, a homeowner is paying a diagnostic fee to have a technician swap thermostat batteries. We’d rather that not be you. Start with the safe checks anyone can run, sort the issue by what you are noticing, know where do-it-yourself work has to stop, and follow the safety rules first. The five-minute checks: run these before you call anyone
None of these require tools, removed panels, or anything riskier than a step stool. Work the list in order — it’s sequenced from most likely to least.
- Thermostat, honestly checked. Confirm the mode is COOL (or HEAT in winter), the setpoint sits several degrees past the current room temperature, and the fan is on AUTO. A blank or frozen screen usually means dead batteries — replace them before assuming catastrophe. Look for a schedule or hold override too; in a busy household, “the AC is broken” is routinely “someone changed the program.”
- The filter, held up to a light. If light barely passes through it, you may have already found the problem. Valley dust loads clog filters far faster than the packaging assumes, and a starved system loses airflow, loses cooling capacity, and can eventually freeze its own coil solid.
- Breakers — one reset, exactly one. Find a tripped breaker labeled AC, condenser, air handler, or furnace, and reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call. A breaker that won’t hold is doing its job — standing between you and an electrical fault — and forcing it repeatedly turns a repair call into a fire hazard.
- The outdoor unit, eyes only. Walk outside and look: is the fan spinning? Is the unit humming without moving? Is it packed with dust, palo verde litter, or debris from the last storm? Observe and report — don’t open anything. “It hums for a few seconds, clicks, and goes quiet” is genuinely valuable diagnostic information.
- Ice on the refrigerant lines. Frost on the copper lines at the condenser or air handler means: cooling OFF, fan ON, and several hours of patience while everything thaws. Running an iced system can take out the compressor — the most expensive part in the machine. Ice always has an underlying cause, usually airflow or refrigerant, so the thaw is first aid, not a cure.
- The condensate float switch. Many Valley systems carry a small safety switch that shuts cooling down when the drain line backs up — a classic monsoon event, since the drain sits bone-dry for months and then suddenly has work to do. A system that quit abruptly with dampness near the indoor unit points here. The clog still needs clearing, but the mystery is solved.
Symptom quick reference: start with what you notice
You don’t experience a failed capacitor; you experience warm air. This index works in the direction you do.
No cool air at all
Run the five-minute checks first — thermostat, filter, breaker, and float switch cover most sudden total losses. If the indoor fan blows but the outdoor unit stays silent, or everything runs and the air never cools, you’re likely into capacitor, contactor, or refrigerant territory — pro work. Head to AC repair, or straight to emergency AC repair if it’s high summer and the house is climbing.
Weak airflow
Feeble airflow at the registers is almost always an air-side problem: a loaded filter, a blocked return grille, closed or furniture-covered vents, or duct trouble in the attic. Strong airflow that simply isn’t cold points the other direction — toward refrigerant or a tired compressor. Noting which one you have before you call genuinely shapes the diagnosis.
Noises, by type
Screeching or grinding suggests a motor bearing on its way out — shut the system down. Buzzing at the outdoor unit is commonly electrical: a straining capacitor or a chattering contactor. Banging or thumping can be a loose blower component beating itself apart. Clicking that never leads to startup is a control or ignition sequence failing to complete. Hissing may be refrigerant escaping or a duct leak. None of these are run-it-and-hope noises.
Smells, by type
Dirty socks when cooling kicks on is usually biological growth on a damp evaporator coil — unpleasant, common, fixable. Musty suggests condensate pooling where it shouldn’t. Burning or hot-electrical means kill it at the breaker and call. Rotten eggs is the gas-odorant warning — not a troubleshooting item at all, but the evacuation item covered below.
Water where it shouldn’t be
Water around the air handler, a fresh ceiling stain under an attic unit, or a drip from a small pipe at the eave all point at the condensate system. That eave drip is the emergency overflow line announcing the primary drain is clogged — a warning shot worth heeding before the drain pan loses the fight. If water is actively spreading, shut cooling off.
Short cycling
Starting, running briefly, and quitting on repeat is brutal on every component and deserves prompt attention. Causes range from harmless — a thermostat catching a sun patch through a window — to serious: low charge, an overheating compressor, an oversized system. If a filter change and a thermostat sanity check don’t cure it, book the visit; short cycling is how small failures purchase bigger ones.

Where DIY ends and a pro begins
Three bright lines, no judgment calls required:
- Refrigerant. Federal law restricts who may buy and handle it, and gauge readings only mean something with training behind them. There is no safe homeowner version of “topping it off” — and the canned sealer products sold online can convert a repairable leak into a condemned system.
- Electrical, past the breaker panel. Capacitors hold a charge after the power is cut; they injure people who open panels confidently. Anything beyond “reset it once” belongs to someone carrying a meter and the license to use it.
- Gas, entirely. Burners, gas valves, venting, heat exchangers: combustion and carbon monoxide are not learn-by-doing subjects. Nothing else on this page carries stakes this high.

A little preparation turns dispatch from twenty questions into a quick booking. Worth having ready: what the system is doing and when it started; which of the checks above you’ve already run; the brand and rough age if you know them (the outdoor unit’s data plate helps); whether you’ve got a split system, rooftop package unit, or heat pump; and whether anyone in the house is heat-vulnerable — that last one changes how summer calls get triaged. The safety absolutes
Everything above assumes an inconvenience. These two are different animals:
- Gas smell — leave first. Don’t flip switches, don’t open windows on your way, don’t start a car in an attached garage. Get everyone out, then call 911 and Southwest Gas from outside or from a neighbor’s house. The furnace can wait indefinitely; this cannot.
- Burning smell or smoke — kill the system at the breaker, and call 911 at any sign of actual fire. An electrical burning odor with no visible source still means the equipment stays off until someone inspects it.
Troubleshooting questions we hear constantly
My AC runs nonstop on 115° days and never quite reaches the setpoint. Is it broken?
Possibly not. Systems here are sized for Phoenix design temperatures, not the record-breakers — on extreme afternoons, continuous running with indoor temps a few degrees shy of target can be normal behavior. The red flag is new behavior: if it kept up fine last July and can’t now, something has changed and deserves a look.
How long does a frozen system take to thaw?
Commonly several hours with cooling off and the fan running — longer if the ice is thick. Never chip or pry at it; coil fins are soft and the refrigerant circuit is pressurized. Once thawed, run it and watch: if ice returns, stop and book a diagnosis rather than repeating the cycle.
Can I keep using the system while I wait for my appointment?
Depends on the symptom. Weak-but-working cooling: usually yes. Iced lines, grinding, buzzing, burning smells, or repeated breaker trips: no — continued running is how a modest repair becomes a compressor replacement. When you book, ask; the answer changes with the diagnosis.
What temperature difference should I feel at the vents?
With the system settled in, supply air commonly runs somewhere near twenty degrees cooler than the return air pulling in. A much smaller split suggests charge or coil trouble; measuring at the register with a kitchen thermometer is a perfectly respectable homeowner test.
Does closing vents in unused rooms help the rest of the house cool?
No — it commonly backfires. Ducts are designed around a certain airflow, and closing registers raises pressure, strains the blower, worsens duct leakage, and can push a system toward freezing. Keep vents open and manage comfort at the thermostat instead.
Why do systems always seem to die in the evening?
Late afternoon is peak stress: the house is heat-soaked, the attic is at its worst, and the equipment has been running since morning. Marginal components — a weakening capacitor above all — fail at maximum load, which lands right around dinnertime in July.
