AC Running but Not Cooling? Here’s What’s Actually Happening.

If your AC is running but the house is not cooling, start with airflow. A clogged filter, blocked return, dirty indoor coil, or weak blower can make cold air production collapse. If airflow feels normal, the next suspects are refrigerant charge or an outdoor electrical problem. You can check the simple items safely before calling.

What’s actually happening

An air conditioner does not make cold from nothing. It moves heat. The indoor coil absorbs heat from house air. Refrigerant carries that heat outside. The outdoor coil dumps it into the air. The blower, compressor, condenser fan, metering device, and refrigerant charge all have to line up for that heat move to work.

When people say the AC is not cooling, they usually mean one of three things. The system is moving plenty of air, but that air is not cold. The system is making some cold air, but not enough of it. Or the system cools for a while, then loses ground as the day gets hotter. Those details matter because they point to different failures.

The key is not to guess from one symptom. A clogged filter and a low refrigerant charge can both make a line freeze. A bad capacitor and a failed compressor can both leave the outdoor unit silent. A good diagnosis checks airflow, temperature split, electrical readings, refrigerant pressures, and the condition of the coils before naming the repair.

Checks you can safely make yourself

  1. Check the thermostat setting. Make sure it is set to cool, the temperature is set below room temperature, and the fan is on auto unless you are intentionally circulating air. If the screen is blank, replace batteries if your model uses them.
  2. Look at the air filter. A filter loaded with gray dust, pet hair, or construction debris can choke the system. Replace it with the correct size and direction. Do not run without a filter to “test it.” That moves dirt into the indoor coil.

  4. Look at the return grilles and supply vents. Furniture, curtains, rugs, and closed registers can restrict flow. A system needs open paths for air to leave and return. Closing a bunch of vents usually raises static pressure and makes cooling worse.
  5. Check the outdoor disconnect and thermostat wire visually. Do not open the electrical panels inside the unit. Confirm the disconnect is seated if it is the pull-out type and look for obvious damage, chewing, or a loose low-voltage wire.
  6. Check the breaker once. If the AC breaker is tripped, turn it fully off, then back on one time. If it trips again, stop. A second trip is the system telling you there is an electrical fault.
  7. Look for water in the float switch pan or drain safety switch. Many systems shut down or interrupt cooling when condensate backs up. If the switch is wet, the drain needs attention. Do not bypass the switch to keep cooling.

Do not touch capacitors. They can hold a charge after power is off. Do not add refrigerant. Refrigerant work requires the right tools, licensing, recovery practices, and leak diagnosis. If your system has gas heat, keep the gas valve closed if you smell gas or suspect a furnace issue, and do not relight or adjust it as part of an AC check.

The usual split is airflow, refrigerant, or the outdoor unit. If airflow is weak, check the filter, returns, vents, and float switch first. If airflow is strong but the air is not cold, the refrigeration or electrical side needs testing. Do not keep lowering the thermostat. It will not force a broken system to make colder air.

Can a dirty filter really make the AC stop cooling?
