An ac leaking water inside is usually a clogged condensate drain or a frozen coil melting faster than the drain can carry it away. What’s actually happening

Air conditioners do two jobs at the same time. They pull heat out of the house, and they pull moisture out of the air. Warm indoor air crosses the cold evaporator coil. A ceiling stain changes the urgency. Put a towel or pan under the drip if you can do that safely, then shut cooling off at the thermostat. Do not keep running the system to see if it clears itself.   1. Turn cooling off at the thermostat. Use off, not just a higher temperature. Let the blower run only if you know the coil is iced and there is no active water near electrical parts.
  2. Check the air filter. A filter that is gray, bowed, whistling, or sucked tight against the grille can starve airflow. Replace it with the correct size and airflow rating. Do not stack filters.
  3. Look for ice. Check the larger insulated copper line near the indoor unit or outdoor condenser. Frost or ice points toward airflow or refrigerant trouble. Let the system thaw before anyone opens panels.
  4. Inspect the float switch. Many attic units have a small safety switch on the drain line or secondary pan. If the pan is wet, the switch may be stopping the unit to prevent more water damage. Do not bypass it.
  5. Check the visible drain termination. If you know where the condensate exits, look for steady dripping while the system runs. No water during humid cooling can mean the drain is blocked, but it is not proof by itself.
  6. Look at the breaker once. If the unit stopped, you can reset a tripped breaker one time. If it trips again, stop. Repeated resets can damage equipment and wiring.
  7. Make sure supply and return vents are open. Closed vents and blocked returns reduce airflow across the coil. Move rugs, boxes, and furniture away from grilles.

Do not open sealed refrigerant lines, cut drain piping in an attic, handle capacitors, or reach into equipment with power connected. Capacitors can hold charge after power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work. If the system is gas heat with a shared cabinet, leave the gas valve closed if it is already closed and do not experiment with it.

Stop when water is reaching drywall, insulation, lights, smoke alarms, or electrical panels. Stop when you see ice. Stop when the float switch has tripped, because that switch is not the problem; it is the warning. Stop if the breaker trips a second time, if the drain pan is rusted through, or if the unit restarts and leaks again within the same day.

Continuing to run a leaking system can soak insulation, stain ceilings, warp trim, and pull dust into a wet coil cabinet. If the coil is freezing, running it harder usually makes the ice thicker. That can stress the compressor, reduce oil return, and turn a small airflow issue into a larger mechanical problem.

What the fix usually involves

The simple end of the repair is a blocked drain, dirty filter, loose trap, or wet float switch. Why is my AC leaking water all of a sudden?

The usual sudden causes are a drain clog, a tripped float switch, a filter that finally choked airflow, or monsoon humidity pushing more condensate through a marginal drain. The equipment may have been close to leaking for weeks. The day you notice it is just the day the pan or drain lost the fight.

Is bleach safe for an AC drain line?

Bleach can be hard on some fittings, pans, and nearby finishes. It also will not fix a packed clog or bad drain pitch.
