AC Clicks but Won’t Start.
AC clicking but not starting usually means the thermostat is asking for cooling, but the outdoor unit is not getting through the relay, contactor, capacitor, or compressor start chain. A homeowner can check power, settings, filter, and one breaker reset. Anything involving capacitors, refrigerant, or compressor wiring is pro work.
What’s actually happening
An air conditioner starts in steps. The thermostat senses room temperature, compares it to the set point, and sends a low-voltage call for cooling. That signal runs through safety switches and control wiring before it reaches the outdoor unit. At the condenser, a contactor closes. That is the click many people hear. When the contactor pulls in cleanly, line voltage reaches the compressor and fan motor, and the capacitor helps those motors start under load.
If you hear one firm click and then nothing moves, the control side may be doing its job while the high-voltage or motor-start side has failed. A weak capacitor can let the contactor click while the compressor only hums or sits locked. A burned contactor can click but not pass power through pitted contacts. A tripped breaker can leave the thermostat calling for cooling with no real power available outside. A bad compressor is less common than a bad capacitor or contactor, but it is one of the expensive possibilities.
Short, repeated clicking is different. That can be a thermostat relay chatter, a loose low-voltage connection, a failing transformer, or a safety switch opening and closing. In Arizona slab-on-grade homes, the indoor equipment and ducts are often in an attic that can hit 150°F+. Do not assume the loudest part is the failed part. A thermostat click can be normal. A contactor click can be normal. The failure is often the part that should act next but does not.
Checks you can safely make yourself
- Confirm the thermostat mode and set point. Set it to cool, lower the set point at least 3 degrees below room temperature, and wait five minutes. Many thermostats have a built-in delay to protect the compressor.
- Replace thermostat batteries if it uses them. Weak batteries can make the display look normal while the relay behaves badly. If the thermostat is hardwired with battery backup, fresh batteries still remove one variable.
- Check the indoor air filter. A packed filter can freeze the coil or trip safety controls. If the filter is bowed, gray, or loaded with dust, replace it with the correct size and airflow direction.
- Look at the breaker panel. If the AC breaker is tripped, reset it one time only. Push it fully off, then back on. If it trips again, stop. Repeated resets can damage equipment and heat up wiring.
- Check the outdoor disconnect position. Make sure the disconnect has not been pulled or switched off. Do not open a fused disconnect or handle burned parts.
- Look for water at the float switch or drain pan. Some systems shut off cooling when condensate backs up. If a switch is sitting in water, the shutdown is doing its job.
- Make sure supply and return vents are open. Closed rooms and blocked returns can push the system into poor airflow and freeze-up. Arizona homes already ask a lot from attic ducts in 150°F+ spaces.
- Listen once, then leave it alone. Note whether the click is at the thermostat, indoor unit, or outdoor unit. That detail helps more than cycling the system ten times.
Do not touch capacitors. They can hold charge after power is off. Do not add refrigerant or use a refrigerant can. Refrigerant is licensed work and the charge has to be weighed or measured against operating conditions. If the system is gas heat with shared controls, leave the gas valve closed if you find it closed. Do not open gas because you are trying to fix cooling.
When to stop and call
Stop when the breaker trips twice, the outdoor unit hums without starting, the fan blade needs a push to move, the contactor chatters, you smell hot plastic, or the compressor tries to start and quits. Those are electrical or mechanical symptoms, and continuing to run the system can turn a small failed part into a burned motor, damaged compressor terminals, or overheated wiring.
Also stop if ice is forming on the copper line or indoor coil. A frozen coil can come from low airflow or refrigerant trouble. Running it while frozen does not make more cooling. It can send liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor and make diagnosis messy because readings are wrong until the coil thaws.

Why does my AC click but not turn on?
The thermostat or contactor is probably sending a start signal, but the part that should move next is not doing its job. Common causes are a weak capacitor, bad contactor, tripped breaker, float switch, or compressor start problem. The click is a clue, not a diagnosis.
Can I reset the breaker and try again?
One reset is reasonable if the breaker is tripped. Turn it fully off, then back on. If it trips again, stop. A second trip means the system is pulling too much current or has a fault. Repeated resets can damage the AC and the circuit.
Is a clicking AC dangerous?
