Indoor Blowing, Outdoor Unit Dead: What Failed.

When the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is not running, the usual suspects are a failed capacitor, bad contactor, tripped breaker, pulled disconnect, thermostat/control issue, or a motor that cannot start. You can check settings, breakers, filter, float switch, and disconnect position. Do not open the condenser or test capacitors yourself.

What’s actually happening

A split AC has two main pieces. The indoor side moves house air across the evaporator coil. The outdoor side runs the compressor and condenser fan so heat can leave the refrigerant and dump outdoors. If the indoor blower is running but the outdoor unit is dead, the house may feel like air is moving, but the refrigeration cycle is not doing its job.

The thermostat sends a cooling call. Low-voltage controls pass that call through safeties and into the outdoor unit. The contactor pulls in, high voltage feeds the compressor and fan motor, and the capacitor helps those motors start and run. Checks you can safely make yourself

  1. Confirm the thermostat call. Set it to cool and lower the setting a few degrees below room temperature. Make sure it is not in fan-only mode.
  2. Replace thermostat batteries. Weak batteries can cause odd control behavior. If the screen is blank, also check for a tripped float switch.
  3. Check the air filter. A clogged filter can freeze the indoor coil and trigger safeties. Replace a dirty filter before running more tests.
  4. Look for a float switch trip. Standing water in the pan or drain safety can interrupt cooling. Do not bypass the switch.
  5. Check the breaker once. Find the AC breaker. If it is tripped, turn it fully off, then on one time. If it trips again, stop.
  6. Look at the outdoor disconnect. Make sure it appears seated. Do not remove the cover, pull the handle apart, or touch terminals.
  7. Listen from a safe distance. Silent, clicking, humming, buzzing, and fan-only operation point to different failures. Note what you hear.
  8. Clear obvious airflow blockage. Move weeds, leaves, boxes, and covers away from the condenser. Keep hands and tools away from the fan grille.
  9. Open supply vents. Closed vents can make other problems worse and hide airflow symptoms.

Do not push the fan blade with a stick. That old trick can injure you and does not fix the cause. Do not open the condenser panel. Capacitors hold charge after power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work. If your system includes gas heat, leave gas valves closed.

When to stop and call

Stop when the outdoor unit hums but does not start, when the breaker trips after one reset, when you smell electrical heat, when the fan runs but the compressor does not, or when the compressor runs but the fan does not. Those are electrical or mechanical symptoms. Letting the indoor blower run will not cool the house if the outdoor unit is dead.

Continuing to run a failed outdoor unit can overheat motors, cook terminals, trip safety limits, and stress the compressor. A weak capacitor can damage a motor. A stalled fan can make head pressure climb fast. A contactor that chatters can burn contacts and wiring. What starts as a small part can become a larger repair if the unit keeps trying to start under bad conditions. Heat also changes the timing. A unit that tries once, cools off, and tries again may look intermittent from inside the house, but outside it may be cycling through failed starts and thermal protection.

What the fix usually involves
