What’s actually happening

- Look at the outdoor disconnect. Confirm it is in place and not switched off. Do not pull panels or reach into the cabinet.
- Clear loose debris around the unit. Remove leaves, plastic, weeds, or storage items around the coil. Do not pressure-wash the coil or bend fins.
- Look for a float switch issue. A backed-up drain or pan can shut equipment off and confuse the symptom pattern, especially with attic air handlers.
Do not add refrigerant. Refrigerant is licensed work, and a low system has a leak or another cause that needs diagnosis. Do not test capacitors; they can hold charge. If your system has gas heat as part of a dual-fuel setup, leave gas valves alone.

Running an iced system can damage the compressor. Liquid refrigerant can return where vapor should be. Motors can overheat. Airflow can drop until the system runs constantly and still misses the thermostat. In an attic installation, thawing ice can also put water where it does not belong.
