AC Won’t Restart After an Outage.
If the AC is not working after a power outage, the most likely culprits are a tripped breaker, a thermostat that has not rebooted, or a compressor lockout delay. Those are safe to check. If the breaker trips twice, the outdoor unit hums without starting, or you smell electrical heat, stop and call for service.
What’s actually happening
An air conditioner does not like dirty power. During an outage, voltage can drop, disappear, return, sag again, and spike. The thermostat, indoor blower, control board, transformer, outdoor contactor, capacitor, and compressor all have to come back in the right order. If one part wakes up late or fails under the surge, the system can look dead even though the house has power.
Many thermostats and control boards also build in a delay after power loss. That delay protects the compressor from trying to restart against high refrigerant pressure. You may set the thermostat to cool and hear nothing for five minutes. That can be normal. The mistake is flipping breakers and switches repeatedly while the equipment is trying to reset.
That delay matters because the refrigerant side is still settling after shutdown. The compressor just spent the last cycle squeezing refrigerant into a hot outdoor coil. When power drops, pressures do not instantly equalize. In Phoenix-metro heat, the condenser cabinet may already be sitting in full sun on a roof, patio pad, or side yard with block walls reflecting heat back at it. A rushed restart asks the compressor to push against that pressure before the motor and capacitor have a clean electrical start.
The outdoor unit has the hardest job after an outage. The compressor needs a strong start capacitor or run capacitor, stable voltage, and a contactor that pulls in cleanly. A weak capacitor may have been close to failure before the outage. The first hot restart after power returns can finish it off. Then the outdoor fan may run while the compressor stays silent, or the compressor may hum and trip the breaker.
The indoor side has its own timing problem. If the blower starts late, warm attic ducts can dump a blast of hot air before cooling stabilizes. If the blower never starts, the evaporator coil can get cold without enough room air crossing it. The system may seem like it is trying, but the physics are wrong: heat has to move from the rooms, through the return, across the coil, into the refrigerant, and out through the condenser. Power loss interrupts every step.
Smart thermostats add another layer. Some run on a common wire. Some have internal batteries. Some need Wi-Fi to restore schedules or remote settings. After an outage, the screen may be lit but the cooling call may not be sent correctly. Some symptoms show up only after the house begins to heat soak. Ceiling drywall, furniture, tile, and interior walls absorb heat while the AC is off. When cooling returns, the system is not just lowering air temperature. It is pulling stored heat out of the whole structure. That heavy first cycle can expose a weak capacitor, a tired fan motor, or a contactor that chatters instead of closing firmly.
Checks you can safely make yourself
- Wait before resetting everything. Set the thermostat to cool, lower the setpoint a few degrees, and wait 10 minutes. Many systems have a built-in delay after power interruption.
- Check thermostat mode and power. Make sure it is on cool, not heat, off, or fan-only. Replace batteries if the thermostat uses them. For a smart thermostat, give it time to reboot.
- Check the indoor breaker and outdoor breaker once. A tripped breaker usually sits between on and off. Turn it fully off, then back on. Do this one time only.
- Check the outdoor disconnect without opening the unit. If you have a pull-out or switch-style disconnect near the condenser, make sure it is seated or switched on. Do not remove covers or touch exposed wiring.
- Check the air filter. A clogged filter can trip limits, freeze coils, and make recovery after an outage slower. Replace it if it is loaded with dust.
- Look for a float switch trip. If the air handler is in an attic or closet and the drain backed up, a float switch may shut cooling off. Do not bypass the switch. Clear standing water only if you can do it without opening electrical compartments.
- Open supply and return vents. Closed vents and blocked returns make the system run hot and can turn a restart problem into a freeze-up or pressure problem.
- Listen outside for one clean start attempt. A normal start is a click, then fan and compressor. A hum without fan movement, repeated clicking, or a breaker trip means stop.
Do not test capacitors. They can hold a painful and dangerous charge after power is off. Do not add a hard-start kit because a video made it look simple. Do not open refrigerant lines, add refrigerant, or use gauges unless you are licensed. If your system includes gas heat, leave the gas shutoff alone.
When to stop and call
Call when the breaker trips again after one reset, the outdoor unit hums but does not start, the thermostat stays blank after batteries and breaker checks, or the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit stays dead. Call if you smell burnt plastic or hot electrical insulation. That smell often means a contactor, board, wire, or motor winding has been damaged.
Continuing to force restarts can turn one failed part into several. A bad capacitor can overheat a compressor. A chattering contactor can burn points and damage controls. A low-voltage short can keep blowing fuses until the rub point is found. Running fan-only for comfort is fine if the system allows it, but repeated cooling attempts are not.

What the fix usually involves
The small end of the repair spectrum is simple: thermostat batteries, thermostat programming, a reset float switch after a drain correction, a low-voltage fuse, a contactor, or a capacitor. Those parts still need diagnosis. A capacitor should be measured, not guessed. A blown fuse should lead to a search for the short, not a handful of replacement fuses.
The larger end includes control boards, motors, wiring repairs, transformers, or compressor trouble. If the compressor is locked or grounded, the tech has to talk through age, refrigerant type, warranty status, and whether repair or replacement makes sense. How long should I wait for AC after a power outage?
Wait at least 10 minutes after power is stable. Thermostats and outdoor boards often use a delay to protect the compressor. Set the thermostat to cool, set the temperature below room temperature, and leave it alone. If nothing starts after that, begin with thermostat power and one breaker reset.
Why is my thermostat blank after the outage?
