What’s actually happening
An AC that stops a few degrees above the set point is usually not dead. It is working, but the house is gaining heat as fast as the system can remove it. That balance point matters more than the number on the thermostat. If the unit can remove 30,000 BTUs per hour and the house is gaining almost that much through the attic, windows, ducts, people, appliances, and air leaks, the indoor temperature stalls.
At extreme outdoor temperatures, the stall may be honest. Residential cooling systems are not magic boxes built to make every house 68°F during every heat wave. Many are selected around a design temperature and a reasonable indoor target. When the weather pushes past that, a properly running system may hold 76°F or 78°F while running almost nonstop. That does not automatically mean the unit is too small or broken.
But a few degrees short can also reveal a fixable problem. Airflow is the first suspect because the equipment needs a certain volume of indoor air crossing the evaporator coil. A dirty filter, blocked return, matted coil, weak blower, or crushed attic duct cuts capacity. The system runs, but it handles less heat per hour.
Charge comes next. Too little refrigerant reduces the active area of the coil and can cause freezing. Too much refrigerant can raise head pressure and hurt performance. A metering device that is not feeding correctly can make the same complaint. Insulation and duct leakage also matter. Checks you can safely make yourself
- Confirm the thermostat reading. Set it to cool and auto. Make sure a schedule is not changing the set point. Replace batteries if it uses them. Keep lamps, TVs, and direct sun away from the thermostat because local heat can fool it.
- Use a separate thermometer. Put a simple thermometer near the thermostat for 15 minutes. If the thermostat is off by two degrees, the equipment may be fine and the control may need calibration or replacement.
- Check the filter. A packed filter can make an AC stall near the set point because the coil is not getting enough air. Install the correct size and airflow direction. Avoid stacking filters or using an overly restrictive filter in a system that was not designed for it.
- Open vents and returns. Walk the house. Open supply registers. Move furniture away from returns. Do not close a group of rooms to force more air elsewhere; that can raise duct pressure and reduce total airflow.
- Check the breaker once. If the outdoor or indoor unit breaker is tripped, reset it one time. If it trips again, stop and call. A breaker is a safety device, not a switch for repeated attempts.
- Look for a float switch issue. If the indoor unit is in the attic, check the secondary drain pan. Standing water can lift a float switch and interrupt cooling. Do not bypass the switch.
- Check the outdoor disconnect and coil. Make sure the disconnect is seated. With power off, clear leaves, lint, and loose debris from around the condenser. Gentle hose rinsing is fine from the outside. No pressure washer.
- Notice the pattern. Write down outdoor temperature, thermostat setting, indoor temperature, and whether it recovers after sunset. That pattern helps separate normal peak-load behavior from a repair problem.
Do not open the electrical compartment, touch capacitors, or pull wires. Capacitors can hold charge even after power is off. Do not connect refrigerant gauges or add refrigerant. Refrigerant is licensed work. If gas piping is nearby or a gas valve is closed, leave it closed.
When to stop and call
Call when the system runs nonstop and keeps losing ground, when the indoor temperature never recovers overnight, or when one part of the house is consistently several degrees warmer. Call if you see ice, water in the emergency pan, a repeated breaker trip, a burning smell, or an outdoor unit that hums without starting.
Running a struggling system can get expensive. Low airflow can freeze the coil and send liquid refrigerant where vapor should be. A weak capacitor can overheat a motor. A low-charge system can run the compressor hot. Leaky attic ducts can waste hours of runtime without moving comfort into the rooms where people sleep.

Why won’t my AC drop the last few degrees?
The house may be gaining heat as fast as the AC removes it. That can be normal in extreme heat, especially with attic ducts and sun-loaded rooms. It can also mean restricted airflow, low refrigerant charge, duct leakage, or weak insulation.
Is it normal for AC to be two degrees off?
Sometimes. During a severe heat wave, a system may hold a few degrees above the set point and still be operating correctly. It should recover later when the load drops. If it does not recover overnight, something needs testing.
Does setting the thermostat lower help?
No. A lower setting does not make the air colder. It only extends runtime. If the system is already running continuously, dropping the set point from 75 to 70 usually adds stress and cost without fixing the reason it stalled.
